MCLS Program Goals<\/h3>\n

Upon completion of the UNC-Chapel Hill Master\u2019s in Clinical Laboratory Science \u2013Medical Laboratory Science Track, MLS graduates will be prepared to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Serve as leaders in the clinical laboratory profession in technical, educational, research and administrative roles.<\/li>\n
  2. Critically analyze professional literature and apply that information in work settings.<\/li>\n
  3. Communicate effectively with health care providers and the public.<\/li>\n
  4. Continue to learn throughout their professional careers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    MCLS Educational Objectives<\/h3>\n

    At the completion of the MCLS-MLS program, students will be able to:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Explain the principles and methods used in molecular laboratory tests.<\/li>\n
    2. Explain the clinical significance of molecular laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and the maintenance of health.<\/li>\n
    3. Use the principles of method evaluation to select new techniques and instruments.<\/li>\n
    4. Apply bio-statistical concepts to data to draw conclusions and evaluate significance of research results.<\/li>\n
    5. Use research methods to design, conduct and disseminate results of studies on new technologies, procedures or diagnostic correlations.<\/li>\n
    6. Assess the quality assurance practices used to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory information.<\/li>\n
    7. Explain and apply the major principles and practices of laboratory administration, supervision and budgeting.<\/li>\n
    8. Explain and apply principles of effective test utilization.<\/li>\n
    9. Interpret, implement, and comply with laws, regulations and accrediting standards and guidelines of relevant governmental and non-governmental agencies.<\/li>\n
    10. Apply principles of management to the acquisition and evaluation of laboratory information systems.<\/li>\n
    11. Design, implement and evaluate resource management strategies to maintain optimal laboratory efficiency.<\/li>\n
    12. Develop a strategic plan to support the professional career development of clinical laboratory personnel.<\/li>\n
    13. Use educational methods to present information and develop instructional materials.<\/li>\n
    14. Communicate effectively with diverse audiences using a variety of formats (e.g. presentations, written communications).<\/li>\n
