Questions? Email our <a href=\"mailto:healthsciences@studentaid.unc.edu\">financial aid &amp; student services office<\/a>.\u00a0For scholarships with a need-based component, it may also be necessary to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAFSA<\/a>) in order for the award to be released to the student by the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.\u00a0Our FAFSA code is 002974.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2025-2026, 39% of CLS undergraduates received some form of financial aid from the Division of CLS and\/ or the Department of Health Sciences. Additionally, 67% of CLS graduate students received supplemental aid from the Division of CLS. Many graduate students receive assistance from employers in the form of tuition reimbursement or waivers; all MCLS students received some form of financial aid.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Division-Based Scholarships for Undergraduate CLS Students<\/h2>\n<p>The Division of Clinical Laboratory Science offers the following endowed scholarships for undergraduate CLS students. Additional scholarships may be available depending on donor contributions.<\/p>\n<p>The application deadline for Division of CLS awards is June 1. Recipients will be chosen and notified by\u00a0August 1\u00a0each year. All enrolled students (including newly-accepted students) will receive application instructions each spring.<\/p>\n<p>The primary criteria considered include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>professional competence and potential<\/li>\n<li>academic excellence<\/li>\n<li>personal characteristics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Endowed Scholarships for Undergraduate UNC Clinical Laboratory Science Students<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Louise M. Ward Scholarships<\/strong><br \/>\nA bequest from the estate of Louise M. Ward, a former director of the Division, has provided funds to assist and reward students at UNC-Chapel Hill who are studying to become clinical laboratory scientists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Susan Lanning-Taylor Scholarship<\/strong><br \/>\nA gift from Susan Lanning Taylor (\u201985) has provided for a scholarship for a clinical laboratory science student. Financial need is considered in addition to the criteria listed above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kay Johnson, Allene W. Alphin, and Jesse C. Alphin Clinical Laboratory Scholarships<\/strong><br \/>\nAn endowment created by Kay Alphin Johnson (\u201967) and Marvin Johnson provides student scholarships. With this gift, Kay and Marvin Johnson honor Kay\u2019s parents and provide support for NC students who will follow in Kay\u2019s footsteps and make important contributions to the profession of clinical laboratory science.<\/li>\n<li><strong>McConkey Scholarships<\/strong><br \/>\nA gift from the estate of Jeri Lasitter McConkey (&#8217;59) provides funds to assist and reward UNC Clinical Laboratory Science students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>School-Based Tuition Awards for MCLS Students<\/h2>\n<p>The Department of Health Sciences sets aside a portion of our School-Based Tuition receipts to provide financial aid for graduate students based on need. The number and amount of awards varies based on the number of eligible students and each student&#8217;s level of need.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Aid Sources<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>All Division of CLS students are also eligible for\u00a0scholarships awarded by\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/students\/financial-assistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Health Sciences<\/a>. (Students apply for scholarships from the Division of CLS and the Department of Health Sciences with the same application.)<\/li>\n<li>All UNC students are eligible for assistance through the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.unc.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNC\u00a0Office of Scholarships and Student Aid<\/a> (OSSA). When applying for aid, be sure to advise the financial counselor of your program. Some scholarships may require a statement of enrollment; if you need this please contact the CLS office.\n<ul>\n<li>Graduate students should review OSSA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.unc.edu\/graduate\/after-applying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Understanding &amp; Receiving Aid<\/a> page to ensure that you meet the requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professional associations such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ascls.org\/about-us\/awards-and-scholarships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASCLS<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascp.org\/content\/about-ascp\/ascp-foundation\/scholarships-available\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASCP<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncscls.org\/students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASCLS-NC <\/a>provide some scholarships for students enrolled in clinical laboratory education programs.<\/li>\n<li>Our programs qualify for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfnc.org\/fels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forgivable Education Loans for Service<\/a> program. Please note that the deadline for FELS is <strong>March 1<\/strong>.
