{"id":3966,"date":"2018-12-07T10:54:50","date_gmt":"2018-12-07T15:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ocsci\/?p=3966"},"modified":"2018-12-12T12:27:03","modified_gmt":"2018-12-12T17:27:03","slug":"second-year-student-kendyl-cole-specializes-in-neurological-disorders-through-lend-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ocsci\/second-year-student-kendyl-cole-specializes-in-neurological-disorders-through-lend-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Second-Year Occupational Therapy Student Kendyl Cole Specializes in Neurological Disorders through LEND Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.2 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KeH5NapFOb0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" 0=\"allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">Second-year occupational therapy student Kendyl Cole discovered her passion for the profession and for working with people with neurological disorders through a family friend whose experiences with autism spectrum disorder changed Cole&#8217;s worldview and led her to a profession rooted in serving others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;He was the first person I met who had autism,&#8221; Cole explained. &#8220;He is such an amazing individual and taught me so much about how people who function a little differently from you are not really different in a lot of ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cole is a trainee with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cidd.unc.edu\/about\/lend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (LEND) program at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities.<\/a> At LEND, Cole enjoys the interdisciplinary nature of her work and the ability to work with others who face a range of neurodevelopmental disorders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;The LEND program is unique, because it teaches me how I can be a leader in the realm of OT,&#8221; Cole said. &#8220;I get to work collaboratively with other disciplines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cole said she didn&#8217;t realize she wanted to pursue occupational therapy until her senior year in college. &#8220;With occupational therapy, you can work in so many different fields and so many different practice arenas,&#8221; Cole explained. &#8220;I really like to switch up what I&#8217;m doing. [&#8230;] It&#8217;s such a tremendous fit for who I am. I think I really am lucky to have found that good match.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The program has honed Cole&#8217;s critical and clinical reasoning skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;I sort of wanted to be challenged to think differently,&#8221; Cole said. &#8220;I just feel really lucky to be in UNC&#8217;s program.&#8221; The division is housed in the Department of Allied Health
