{"id":4560,"date":"2019-10-23T12:41:16","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ocsci\/?p=4560"},"modified":"2019-10-28T10:45:21","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T14:45:21","slug":"4560-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ocsci\/4560-2\/","title":{"rendered":"First-Year Occupational Therapy Student Noam Shemer Aims to Become Therapist and Advocate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.2 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6ecWskKFSiM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" 0=\"allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p>Noam Shemer is a first-year student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ocsci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy<\/a> who was drawn to the field because of her experiences with sensory issues as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Having grown up in a small town, Shemer explained that she faced more difficulty than her peers while playing on a community playground that was a central location for people to come together and socialize.<\/p>\n<p>Shemer worked with an occupational therapist to overcome these sensory obstacles. Although Shemer might not have been aware of sensory issues she experienced at such a young age, occupational therapy enabled her to experience the joys of playing with other children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I grew older, I realized I was so fascinated with people of all ages and the problems that they navigate in their lives and overcoming those obstacles presented by their environments,\u201d Shemer said.<\/p>\n<p>This fascination is what fueled Shemer\u2019s passion to become both an occupational therapist and an advocate for the profession. She believes health science professionals have opportunities for the impact of their work to go beyond individual clients and also affect the health care and education systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;OTs ask not &#8216;what&#8217;s the matter with you&#8217; but &#8216;what matters to you?'&#8221; Shemer said. &#8220;What&#8217;s unique to OTs is, first of all, seeing the connections between all of these different part&#8217;s of a person&#8217;s life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shemer said she&#8217;s considering working with refugees and immigrants to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve worked a lot with non-native English-speakers through tutoring and teaching. That is a population that I specifically want to work with because I don\u2019t think they have the same access to health care and to therapy as is available to other parts of the population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shemer said she appreciates the interdisciplinary nature of the OT program. Already, she has worked with students in medicine and audiology, among other professions, in order to understand every aspect of a patient\u2019s health and well-being.
