Consultative Physical Therapy for Rheumatic Conditions

This project explores how the consultative physical therapy model can improve early access to exercise and rehabilitation for people with rheumatic conditions. By identifying barriers to physical therapy and understanding patient and clinician expectations, we aim to adapt a flexible, low-intensity consultative approach that supports safe, independent physical activity over time. Our goal is to develop a scalable solution that bridges the referral gap in rheumatology care and promotes long-term musculoskeletal health and function.

Lifestyle Interventions In Rheumatology

Sleep, nutrition, physical activity, social support, managing stress, and limiting smoking and alcohol consumption are the key pillars of a healthy lifestyle. This project gathers perspectives from both patients and healthcare providers to better understand which lifestyle pillars matter most to patients, whether they are discussed during appointments, and what support or resources may be helpful.

PREVAIL Clinical Trial

Disability is common in adults with rheumatoid arthritis. Rehabilitation and exercise can improve disability but are not well integrated into routine care. The proposed study is necessary to develop a model to integrate rehabilitation and exercise guidance into routine care with the goal of preserving valued activities in life for adults with rheumatoid arthritis.

Strength & Conditioning Programs for Individuals with RA

Strength training has been found to be beneficial for people with RA in their mobility and physical function. It can be intimidating to start strength training without knowledge of how to perform exercises safely and what exercises would help with RA specifically. This project will produce strength programs and educational materials that will be featured on this website for you all to use on your own!
