Instead, all students choose from a variety of electives. Bilingual students can complete an independent study elective that includes general readings regarding serving bilingual individuals, along with a topic of specific interest to the student (recent topics have included aphasia in bilinguals, a review of ASHA practice policy related to serving bilingual individuals, bilingual phonology). The community-based learning experience in Guatemala is also a program elective.

UNC-CH offers a Certificate in Latin American Studies that can be combined with any graduate degree. This certificate requires proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese. A proficiency exam is administered at UNC-CH every semester. The certificate also requires a research project and paper with Latin American content. UNC-CH faculty are available to oversee the research project, which can also count toward our program’s research experience requirement. The certificate in Latin American Studies requires four graduate-level courses with Latin American content. You can take two of these courses within our department (an independent study with Latin American content, and the community based learning experience, which is an elective course). You can select the other two courses from more than 200 graduate level courses at UNC-CH that have Latin American content. These two additional courses cannot count as electives in the SLP degree program and are in addition to the minimum 60 hours required for the MS degree in speech-language pathology.

Our graduate program in speech-language pathology offers several opportunities for bilingual students. In our area, bilingual clinicians are available to supervise clinical experiences in early intervention, schools, and hospitals. Faculty coordinate a community-based learning experience in Guatemala each spring.
