The four-year grants will prepare future audiologists and speech-language pathologists to work with children who have autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities, in addition to hearing loss.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3592\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 163px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/files\/2018\/10\/roush.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/files\/2018\/10\/roush.jpeg\" alt=\"Jackson Roush, PhD\" width=\"153\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Jackson Roush, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3593\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 160px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/files\/2018\/10\/mccomish.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3593 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/files\/2018\/10\/mccomish-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Cara McComish, PhD\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Cara McComish, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The grants are funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/mchb.hrsa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Resources and Services Administration\u2019s Maternal and Child Health Bureau<\/a> and from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/osers\/osep\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Office of Special Education Programs<\/a>. Roush, who will oversee the audiology competent, said nearly 40 percent of children with hearing loss have one or more additional challenges that include autism and other developmental disabilities. \u201cThere is a critical need for clinicians with the knowledge and skills required to serve these special populations,\u201d Roush said.<\/p>\n<p>McComish, who will oversee the speech-language pathology component, said these grants will support workforce development in a specialized and much-needed area within both disciplines. \u201cWe are fortunate to have partners at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities (CIDD), UNC Hospitals, and the Children\u2019s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC where experienced preceptors provide outstanding clinical education and mentoring to our graduate students,\u201d McComish said.<\/p>\n<a class=\"btn btn-primary btn-lg  oscitas-bootstrap-container\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/sphs\/prospective-students\/doctor-of-audiology\/2018-training-grants\/\">Grant Information<\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jackson Roush, PhD, and Cara McComish, PhD, both faculty within the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, have received two federally funded training grants totaling $1.3 million.
