{"id":4173,"date":"2019-07-16T13:30:29","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T17:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/unc-pa\/?page_id=4173"},"modified":"2025-11-18T16:18:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T21:18:16","slug":"goals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/unc-pa\/about\/goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission &#038; Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Master of Health Sciences Physician Assistant Studies program is housed within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in the Department of Health Sciences.<\/p>\n<h2>School of Medicine Mission Statement<\/h2>\n<p>We are proud to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/about\/#mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mission of the UNC School of Medicine<\/a>, and grateful to serve the people of North Carolina.<\/p>\n<h2>Goals Measures and Outcomes<\/h2>\n<div role=\"tablist\" class=\"panel-group accordion-blue oscitas-bootstrap-container\" id=\"unc-accordion-0\">\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-0\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h3 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-0\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-0\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-0\">\n                Recruit non-traditional students<sup>1<\/sup> with special attention to veterans<sup>2<\/sup> and North Carolina residents            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h3>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-0\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> UNC-CH classifies non-traditional status to applicants who are &gt;26 years of age at time of application.<br \/>\n<sup>2<\/sup> UNC specifically recruits veterans who served in a medical capacity.<\/p>\n<h4>Measures of Success 1: Recruitment events for non-traditional and veteran applicants<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> Minimum of 2 events annually with a focus for nontraditional and military\/veteran applicants<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong> 2025: One PAEA admissions fair and one programmatic admission informational session.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Measures of Success 2: Applicants who are nontraditional or military\/veteran<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> 25% of all applicants<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2021: 31% of all applicants<\/li>\n<li>2022: 27% of all applicants<\/li>\n<li>2023: 25% of all applicants<\/li>\n<li>2024: 23% of all applicants<\/li>\n<li>2025: 26% of all applicants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-1\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h3 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-1\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-1\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-1\">\n                Prepare students to work collaboratively in interprofessional teams.            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h3>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-1\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h4>Measures of Success 1: Engagement of students with optional interprofessional experiences<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> &gt;50% attendance or participation<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2024: 30% of the preclinical cohort volunteered at interprofessional SHAC clinic.\n<ul>\n<li>The program&#8217;s goal of &gt;50% was not met. Several students volunteered multiple times, however, fewer than 50% of the preclinical students volunteered with this clinic. The program faculty, as a result, increased encouragement of participation with the clinic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Measures of Success 2: Graduate survey<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> \u22653.5 on Likert scale<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong> Graduates in the class of 2024 agreed (4.4\/5 with 42% response rate) they were well-prepared to practice in interprofessional patient-centered teams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-2\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h3 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-2\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-2\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-2\">\n                Graduate medical learners who possess the knowledge and skills required to practice as physician assistants            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h3>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-2\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h4>Measures of Success 1: 5-year first-time test taker PANCE performance<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> At national average<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong> First-time test-taker PANCE pass rate is 100% for the classes of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 with the national average at 93%, 92%, 92%, and 92% respectively.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Measures of Success 2: All-time PANCE performance<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> At national average<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100% all-time PANCE pass rate from 2021-2024<\/li>\n<li>National all-time PANCE pass rate of 91%, 89%, 89% and 89% for 2021-2024<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Measures of Success 3: Graduate and alumni surveys<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Benchmark:<\/strong> Likert scale3 \u22653.5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong> Graduates in the class of 2024 agreed (4.8\/5 with 42% response rate) the program provided them with a strong foundation for generalist practice.<\/p>\n<p><sup>3<\/sup> Likert Scale: 1 &#8211;
