Tempur Sealy International sponsored the symposium, which focused on the topic of sleep monitoring at home. Keynote speakers included\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/about-us\/bradley-v-vaughn-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brad Vaughn, MD<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\/about-us\/heidi-roth-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heidi Roth, MD<\/a>, both with the\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/neurology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNC School of Medicine&#8217;s Department of Neurology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Presentation topics included the following:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Fitbits, actigraphs, and sleep-related phone apps<\/li>\n<li>Evidence-based mattress sensor development<\/li>\n<li>Pillows for sleep and head position<\/li>\n<li>Snoring vs. apnea<\/li>\n<li>Home sleep monitoring and lessons learned from research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The symposium was offered as a free continuing education course for UNC-CH NDSS students, faculty, UNC Health Care polysomnographic technologists, and other UNC health professionals.<\/p>\n<h3>Student Scholarships<\/h3>\n<p>Tempur Sealy International\u00a0has been\u00a0a generous Platinum Partner of the UNC NDSS Corporate Partners Program since 2012, and the company has funded seven scholarships for students from across the country over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>The program is part of a partnership between the bedding producer and the country\u2019s only bachelor degree program for sleep clinicians to drive insight, innovation, and treatments for sleep.<\/p>\n<p>The four 2015-2016 Tempur-Sealy UNC NDSS scholarship recipients are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tabitha Althoff from Brookfield, Wisconsin<\/li>\n<li>Amy Carlson from Houston, Texas<\/li>\n<li>Charlene Layer from Sound Beach, New York<\/li>\n<li>Leko Morris-Myers from Statesville, North Carolina<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to our corporate sponsors, such as Tempur Sealy, for providing our students with this excellent opportunity to engage in real-world teaching activities beyond the classroom,\u201d said Dr. Mary Ellen Wells, NDSS program director.<\/p>\n<p>The UNC NDSS bachelor degree, the first of its kind in the world, is offered by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, with collaborative coursework offered by UNC-CH. Graduates of the UNC NDSS program benefit from the unique curricula which reflect the ever-changing nature of clinical practice and patient care.
