The\u00a0UNC School of Medicine Academy of Educators<\/a>\u00a0inducted Lisa Johnston,\u00a0PT, PhD,\u00a0and Elizabeth (Betsy) Crais, PhD, CCC-SLP, and ASHA fellow, into its ranks on May 31, 2018. The Academy recognized Johnston and Crais at its Evening of Scholarship, held in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center.<\/p>\n

\n

Johnston, a faculty member in the Department of Allied Health Sciences’ Division of Physical Therapy, is an associate professor and director of professional education. She also directs student and faculty clinical work.<\/p>\n

Crais, a faculty member within the DAHS’ Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences,\u00a0joined the faculty<\/span>\u00a0in 1986. Her research focuses on providing services to young children with special needs, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Founded in 2006, the Academy of Educators emphasizes teaching and supports faculty development in Chapel Hill and across the state. More than 250 active faculty members and 60 resident members represent a diverse population of educators across various specialties.<\/p>\n

The Academy\u2019s mission includes the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To promote and support excellence in teaching and the work and career paths of excellent teachers;<\/li>\n
  2. To promote and fund curricular innovation, evidence-based curricular change and a scholarly approach to the education mission; and<\/li>\n
  3. To provide a forum for education leadership and advice for the dean, vice dean for medical education, and leadership of the curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
