As coaches, they provided valuable support to our participants to make what they were learning in their classes more meaningful in their day-to-day lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacklyn Googins, a second-year master\u2019s student studying occupational therapy, said program participants showcased resilience and adaptability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was uncharted territory, but it also opened up new modalities for communication,\u201d Googins said. \u201cAll of the participants developed the technical skills needed to meaningfully access the Zoom platform and express their ideas in a variety of ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adela Van Name, the project manager and mother of a HEELS Prep participant, said bringing the program\u2019s lessons into the home environment via video allowed for continued support from family members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe families were gracious in letting us come in,\u201d Van Name said. Depending on participants\u2019 goals, tasks often involved cleaning, organizing, grooming, and cooking.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Doran, a second-year student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/crmh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling<\/a>, said each participant worked one on one with a goals and career coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concepts really come to life when it\u2019s translated to their everyday experience,\u201d Doran said.\u00a0An interdisciplinary team of students and staff met weekly with each other to offer varying perspectives on program initiatives. According to Van Name, this also allowed for individualized modifications for the lessons and identifying gaps in service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really allowed for us to get creative and see things from a different way than might have been our first instinct,\u201d Doran said.<\/p>\n<p>Co-coordinator Halie Ellinger (\u201920 MS OT), said this year\u2019s participants brought excitement and dedication to the program. \u201cThey really made the most of the virtual format and truly made the sessions feel engaging and collaborative,\u201d Ellinger said.<\/p>\n<p>Chan credited Ellinger with creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCbRmkJ0b1Q8gSFX3Jw95kUQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube channel<\/a> midway through the program in order to create video tutorials to reinforce the living skills and strategies that participants learned. Participants also shared their own video tutorials on the platform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<!-- iframe plugin v.5.2 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1do0uQ8C5Co\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" 0=\"allowfullscreen&gt;&lt;\/iframe\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p>This year\u2019s 10 participants included six program alumni from the inaugural year. Van Name said both returning and new parents were impressed by the participant\u2019s increased sense of purpose and self-determination.<\/p>\n<p>Googins said HEELS Prep encourages a self-directed model of learning, which emphasizes the ability of adults to function well when they direct their life, their goals, and have support. \u201cThe program involved the participants teaching each other and in many cases, the instructors learning from them,\u201d she said. At the conclusion of the program, participants self-reported increased feelings of confidence in each of the key areas of adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>The HEELS Prep team is exploring a fall 2020 program in order to ensure opportunities for continued learning and support for program participants. \u201cThere is definitely a huge need for adult services that extend beyond high school,\u201d Googins said. \u201cOften, they drop off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Van Name said the online experience has provided insight as to how the program can move forward, perhaps with a hybrid version that would combine online and in-person experience once the program is able to proceed with in-person experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the online platform, Googins said friendships flourished online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important for people to stay socially connected, even if that means in a physically distant way,\u201d Googins said.<\/p>\n<p>Even as the program encountered small glitches, program coordinators and participants turned them into teachable moments, which strengthened concepts already emphasized by the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdulthood is an ongoing, changing process,\u201d Googins said. \u201cIt&#8217;s not linear, and we have to adapt to overcome barriers we&#8217;re facing. As our program grows, we will continually strive to capture this complexity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<a class=\"btn btn-primary btn-lg  oscitas-bootstrap-container\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/give.unc.edu\/donate?f=346016&amp;p=mfah\">Give Now<\/a>\n<p><em>The HEELS Prep program is part of the HEELS 2 Transition organization, an interdisciplinary collaboration among the UNC School of Medicine\u2019s Department of Allied Health Sciences (DAHS), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cidd.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/teacch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TEACCH Autism Program<\/a>, and community partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidpower.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International<\/a>. Dara Chan, ScD, CRC, is an assistant professor in the Division of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. The master\u2019s degree program in occupational therapy is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ocsci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy<\/a>.
