To address this gap,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/people\/molly-beiting\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Molly Beiting<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/people\/molly-beiting\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PhD, CCC-SLP<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Assistant Professor in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, is leading a preliminary study examining a new CAS treatment approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With funding from the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apraxia-kids.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Apraxia Kids Foundation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Beiting\u2019s study explores whether\u00a0a\u00a0group-based\u00a0teletherapy\u00a0intervention can support peer connection, communication effectiveness,\u00a0and social engagement among children ages 11 to 14.\u00a0The study is believed to be the first group-based treatment designed specifically for older children with\u00a0the disorder, and the first\u00a0study\u00a0with a primary focus on outcomes beyond speech accuracy.\u00a0Because CAS is a rare disorder, many children with the condition have never met someone who shares their experience. This study aims to connect children\u00a0with others facing similar challenges in hopes of helping them feel less alone\u00a0and strengthen their communication skills in a supportive, SLP-facilitated\u00a0peer environment.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr.\u00a0Beiting\u2019s interest in the project is rooted in her clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist\u00a0specializing in childhood apraxia of speech.\u00a0\u201cOlder children with CAS are often navigating more complex social situations, but there are very few interventions designed specifically for their needs,\u201d Beiting said. \u201cYoung adults\u00a0with CAS consistently tell us that, in addition to improving\u00a0the\u00a0comprehensibility\u00a0of their speech, feeling confident and connecting with peers are critical to\u00a0their\u00a0quality of life.\u201d\u00a0Before beginning her doctoral training,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Beiting\u00a0worked\u00a0with children\u00a0with CAS\u00a0for several years\u00a0and\u00a0observed\u00a0how\u00a0their needs evolved\u00a0as they transitioned into adolescence.\u00a0Her involvement with Apraxia Kids\u00a0and conversations with\u00a0adolescents and\u00a0young adults\u00a0with CAS\u00a0further shaped\u00a0the study\u2019s emphasis on\u00a0real-world outcomes\u00a0and participant perspectives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study was designed using a community\u2011based approach, with parents of children with CAS and young adults with CAS working closely with researchers to shape key decisions. Based on this input, the study will launch in summer 2026, as families often have greater scheduling flexibility when school is out of session. The team also selected a teletherapy model \u2014delivering sessions remotely through Zoom\u2014to make it easier for families to participate.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study\u00a0will begin\u00a0participant\u00a0recruitment in the spring and\u00a0is expected to last approximately two months,\u00a0including\u00a0the\u00a0initial\u00a0assessment, baseline sessions,\u00a0five weeks of group\u00a0teletherapy, and follow-up.\u00a0In addition to measuring changes in communication\u00a0effectiveness, researchers will collect participant\u00a0feedback through focus groups to understand how children experience the intervention. Beiting\u00a0said,\u00a0children\u00a0have\u00a0the most\u00a0valuable insight into their own experiences and can provide meaningful feedback on how the study worked and how it could be improved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking ahead,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Beiting hopes the findings will\u00a0inform more holistic approaches to CAS treatment.\u00a0Beiting said she is interested in whether the program could complement traditional speech therapy or potentially serve as a combined approach. \u201cAfter we determine whether the\u00a0treatment works,\u00a0we need to know how it\u00a0pairs\u00a0with existing treatments,\u201d Beiting said. \u201cIs it something that would replace that speech accuracy-based treatment\u00a0for teens? Could it be combined\u00a0with existing approaches?\u201d\u00a0Ultimately, the\u00a0hope is that the findings will lead to new ways to treat CAS and help children\u00a0develop\u00a0not only more effective communication, but also a community of support\u00a0within one another.<\/span><span
