She began practicing clinically in 2012 and later earned a master\u2019s degree in applied behavior analysis from Ball State University in 2021.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the early 1990\u2019s, Jarrett\u2019s mother was a was a speech-language pathologist who specialized in autism care, before autism was widely understood. During middle and high school, Jarrett spent time in clinics observing sessions, helping with social support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She said she was drawn to autism work because no two days are the same. The science behind applied behavior analysis appealed to her analytical approach, allowing her to bring structure and evidence-based decision-making to complex and often unpredictable situations. Becoming a mother later added a parental perspective to her work when her son was diagnosed with autism at an early age.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before entering her doctoral program, Jarrett worked as a speech-language pathologist in clinical settings, including private practice.\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u2019ve worked in a variety of settings, including clinics, schools, and consultative roles, and I continue to work clinically today,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d Jarrett\u00a0said. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Some of the most memorable moments for me have always been first words, the first time a child initiates play, and seeing trainees get excited about learning something new.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through her clinical experience, Jarrett began noticing recurring challenges across different environments, which led her to pursue doctoral training. During her time at UNC, she became interested in implementation science, which examines why evidence-based interventions that are known to work are often difficult to implement consistently in real-world settings such as schools,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">clinics\u00a0and homes.\u00a0For her dissertation, Jarrett developed\u00a0and piloted an observational measure of therapeutic alliance between young\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">utistic children and their service providers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She believes practices must be both effective and acceptable, noting that prioritizing one without the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other can limit impact.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">I often say that my training in speech-language pathology taught me\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">what<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to teach, and my training in applied behavior analysis taught me\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">how<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to teach.<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d -Jean Jarrett.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jarrett has practiced\u00a0as both\u00a0an SLP and BCBA in the same clinic,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an approach she found especially effective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0The intersection of the two has allowed her to teach\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communication skills during speech sessions while using behavioral principles to structure learning, reinforce progress, and ensure those skills generalize across settings.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jean Jarrett is a fourth-year PhD student in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the UNC School of Medicine.
