On Saturday, March 28, the UNC School of Medicine Division of Physical Therapy hosted its annual DPT Exploratory Day, welcom<\/span>ing\u00a041\u00a0prospect<\/span>ive students for an inside look at the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and\u00a0<\/span>the physical therapy\u00a0profession.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Held in Bondurant Hall, the full-day event offered attendees an immersive\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>engaging<\/span>\u00a0experience.\u00a0The program opened with a\u00a0welcome from\u00a0<\/span>Bria Dunn, PT, DPT,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and current student Mikaela \u201cMiki\u201d Garcia, who set the tone for a day centered on connection, exploration, and insight into\u00a0the\u00a0field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Attendees then\u00a0participated\u00a0in an introduction to the UNC DPT program, led by Division Director\u00a0<\/span>Tim Eckard, PT, DPT, PhD,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0alongside current student Jade Butcher. The session provided an overview of the program\u2019s structure, curriculum, and opportunities, helping prospective students better understand what to expect from their academic journey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the session, Eckard\u00a0engaged attendees with a live poll to learn more about their backgrounds. The results highlighted the program\u2019s strong in-state<\/span>\u00a0representation,<\/span>\u00a0with 98% of participants traveling from across North Carolina and a small number attending from out of state. While out-of-state representation was limited, current student Miki Garcia, originally from California, shared that she first discovered the Exploratory Day online, flew in to attend, and later applied to UNC without initially expecting it to become her future program, underscoring how events like these can expand access and open doors for students beyond North Carolina.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following a short break<\/span>,\u00a0attendees\u00a0participated\u00a0in a\u00a0<\/span>hands-on lab experience\u00a0led by faculty including\u00a0<\/span>Bria Dunn,\u00a0PT, DPT<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Michael Lewek, PT, PhD,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as wel<\/span>l as\u00a0PhD\u00a0<\/span>student\u00a0<\/span>Zoe\u00a0Sheitman, PT, DPT<\/span><\/a>. Held in multiple lab spaces throughou<\/span>t\u00a0the\u00a0School of Medicine,\u00a0these sessions allowed\u00a0program participants\u00a0to engage directly with clinical techniques and technologies used in physical therapy education and practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Later in the morning, attendees gathered for a faculty and alumni panel moderated by\u00a0<\/span>Laurie Ray, PT, PhD<\/span><\/a>. The panel featured a mix of faculty and alumni, including\u00a0<\/span>Tim Eckard, PT, DPT, PhD,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Kyrsten Le, PT, DPT\u00a0(UNC DPT Class of 2024),\u00a0<\/span>Sarah McAuliffe, PT, DPT,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and Diandrea \u201cDee\u201d McCotter, PT, DPT\u00a0(UNC DPT Class of 2015), who shared candid insights into their experiences in the field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Panelists described the day-to-day realities of working in physical therapy as both fast-paced and deeply patient-centered, often consisting of back-to-back one-on-one sessions ranging from 30 to 60 minutes. While schedules vary depending on the setting,\u00a0such as outpatient clinics or hospital-based care,\u00a0the profession consistently involves direct, hands-on interaction with patients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speakers also emphasized the physical and emotional demands of the role. Physical therapists\u00a0frequently\u00a0assist\u00a0patients with mobility and rehabilitation, requiring sustained physical effort throughout the day. At the same time, they highlighted the importance of addressing the full patient experience, recognizing that recovery is often influenced by emotional, social, and environmental factors. As one panelist noted, treating patients means understanding more than just their injury;\u00a0it means understanding their lives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The discussion also explored the importance of\u00a0maintaining\u00a0balance in such a demanding field. Panelists spoke about the need to develop resilience, set boundaries, and avoid carrying patients\u2019 challenges outside of the clinic. While acknowledging the emotional weight of the profession, they also emphasized its rewards, including strong job satisfaction and meaningful, lasting patient relationships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the panel, attendees enjoyed lunch at the Beach Caf\u00e9 and had\u00a0additional\u00a0opportunities for professional headshots before transitioning into afternoon programming. A \u201cDay in the Life\u201d session and small group discussions offered a closer look at the daily experiences of current DPT students, providing space for more personal conversations and questions. Participants also took part in guided tours of the facilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The day concluded with an application and admissions session led by\u00a0<\/span>Laurie Ray, PT, PhD<\/span><\/a>,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0offering practical guidance on the application process and tips for prospective students. Closing remarks from\u00a0<\/span>Bria Dunn, PT, DPT<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and current student Zakaria \u201cZ\u201d Bodiford, SPT\u00a0wrapped up the event, encouraging attendees as they consider their next steps toward a career in physical t<\/span>herapy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By the end of the event, participants left with a stronger understanding of the field and what it means to pursue a DPT at UNC,\u00a0equipped not only with information, but with a clearer vision of their potential future in physical therapy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
