Drawn to the field\u2019s focus on helping people live more independently and engage in meaningful activities, she continued shadowing therapists through high school and college.\u00a0By her second year of college, she knew occupational therapy was the career she wanted to pursue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before coming to UNC, Jewell spent about 10 years working at Creighton University. During that time, she held an administrative role and continued developing her research. As her research expanded, she\u00a0sought a position at UNC\u00a0to\u00a0leverage\u00a0the university\u2019s renowned\u00a0expertise\u00a0in diabetes and community-engaged\u00a0research. She was\u00a0drawn\u00a0to UNC\u2019s collaborative environment, aiming to partner with leading experts\u00a0(both academic and community) to further the impact of her work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Much of Jewell\u2019s research centers on families of children with\u00a0type 1 diabetes, especially those living in rural communities where access to health care is often limited. She notes that these families\u00a0frequently\u00a0face significant barriers to receiving\u00a0timely, consistent support. Her commitment to addressing these gaps is also personal\u2014having grown up in rural\u00a0Iowa;\u00a0Jewell is driven to find creative, practical solutions for underserved populations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:210,&quot;335559739&quot;:210,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jewell is a\u00a0co-principal investigator\u00a0in a newly funded project that combines occupational therapy and music therapy through telehealth. The study, \u201cTelehealth music therapy for adults with endocrine system based autoimmune disease and a depressive disorder: An intervention development\u00a0study,&#8221; will\u00a0develop and test an eight-week telehealth music therapy intervention for adults living with autoimmune or endocrine disorders, including diabetes, who also experience depression or anxiety. The project is funded through the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicmanfoundation.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Music Man Foundation\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Meredith Wilson Pilot Research Program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jewell is collaborating on the project with Melody Schwantes, a music therapist at Appalachian State University. The two researchers\u00a0bring\u00a0different areas of expertise to the project. Jewell contributes experience in community-engaged research, telehealth, and study design, while Schwantes leads the music therapy\u00a0component\u00a0and has adapted the therapeutic intervention used in the study.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study will take place in North Carolina and will be delivered entirely through telehealth. \u00a0Jewell said the project will explore how creative therapies like music therapy\u00a0can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0improve\u00a0behavioral and psychosocial\u00a0outcomes for people managing chronic conditions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jewell is also leading the REAL-Fam study, which stands for \u201cResilient, Empowered, Active Living with Diabetes.\u201d The framework was originally developed for young adults with\u00a0type 1 or\u00a0type 2 diabetes living in urban areas. Jewell and her team have since adapted the program to support families in rural communities who have young children, ages 2 to 11, living with\u00a0type 1 diabetes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study plans to recruit 16 families, with half\u00a0participating\u00a0in the telehealth occupational therapy intervention and half placed in a comparison group. Families in the intervention group take part in occupational therapy sessions delivered over telehealth during a 12-week period, while the comparison group receives periodic check-ins.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jewell said one unique aspect of the program is that it focuses on the entire family rather than only the child\u00a0living\u00a0with the diagnosis.\u00a0Previous\u00a0research has shown that when a child is diagnosed with\u00a0type 1 diabetes, it can lead to major lifestyle changes for the entire household. Because of this, the intervention aims to support family routines, diabetes management, and caregiver well-being.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across her research projects, community partnerships\u00a0remain\u00a0central to\u00a0Jewell\u2019s\u00a0work. She collaborates with families,\u00a0caregivers,\u00a0and community organizations to ensure her research reflects the real needs of rural communities.
