The week is designed to raise awareness about careers in the health professions.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Allied Health Sciences will celebrate its 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary in 2021. It houses seven divisions across the health care spectrum. Dynamic programs, centers, and office provide exemplary teaching, innovative research, and patient-centered clinical care to North Carolinians and beyond. Stephen Hooper, PhD, is the department\u2019s chair; he is also an associate dean in the UNC School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate programs in the DAHS are among the most highly ranked, according to U.S. News &amp; World Report.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Metrics that matter<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>95 percent of graduates reported working in a position related to their degree.<\/li>\n<li>77 percent of enrolled students are North Carolinians.<\/li>\n<li>35 percent of students are first-generation college students.<\/li>\n<li>71 percent of 2016 graduates work in 16 different counties across North Carolina, a distance of more than 300 miles.<\/li>\n<li>The DAHS is comprised of nearly 80 faculty and nearly 500 students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Learn more about the DAHS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Division of Clinical Laboratory Science:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/288600068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hear from Hannah<\/a>, a graduate student in the Molecular Diagnostic Science program who is able to work on her master\u2019s degree online.<\/li>\n<li>Division of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/crmh\/2018\/10\/second-year-mariel-marshall-hopes-to-close-health-care-gaps-in-rehabilitation-and-counseling\/\">Hear from Mariel<\/a>, a second-year student who hopes to close gaps in health care.<\/li>\n<li>Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy: Hear from Antoine Bailliard, PhD, OTR\/L, speaking about homelessness and how the tiny house movement makes an impact, on this week\u2019s edition of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/yourhealthradio.org\/\">Your Health Radio<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Physician Assistant Studies: Read about Janelle Bludorn\u2019s, PA-C, recent recognition from the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/unc-pa\/2018\/08\/janelle-bludorn-pa-c-awarded-ncapas-2018-pa-of-the-year-award\/\">2018 PA of the Year<\/a> for her work in promoting PA education on a nationwide scale.<\/li>\n<li>Division of Physical Therapy: Hear from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/259030475\">Doctor of Physical Therapy student Anjali Paintal<\/a> and why patient care is at the heart of her passion for physical therapy.<\/li>\n<li>Division of Radiologic Science: Hear from faculty member\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/275656538\">Isaack Boru<\/a>, MSRS, RT(R), (MRI), about his dual role as faculty member and at UNC Hospitals.<\/li>\n<li>Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences: Hear from third-year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/sphs\/2018\/10\/third-year-doctor-of-audiology-student-arielle-abrams-finds-passion-by-sharing-her-hearing-loss-story\/\">Doctor of Audiology student Arielle Abrams<\/a>, who found her passion by sharing her own story of hearing loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DAHS also houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/clds\/\">Center for Literacy and Disability Studies<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/hmsc.unc.edu\/\">Center for Human Movement Science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/ndss\/\">Neurodiagnostics and Sleep Science<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/research\/\">Office of Research &amp; Scholarship<\/a>, among other initiatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UNC School of Medicine Department of Allied Health Sciences celebrated National Allied Health Professions week from November 5 until November 9.
