{"id":4254,"date":"2019-02-26T13:25:23","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T18:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/?p=4254"},"modified":"2019-02-26T15:35:57","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T20:35:57","slug":"student-action-health-coalition-shac-transitions-physical-therapy-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/2019\/02\/student-action-health-coalition-shac-transitions-physical-therapy-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC) Transitions Physical Therapy Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/shac\/services\/clinics\/medical\/physical-therapy-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC),<\/a> a student-led organization that provides health services at no cost to local uninsured and underinsured populations, has selected its incoming cohort of student leaders from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/healthsciences\/physical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Division of Physical Therapy<\/a>. SHAC creates a unique interdisciplinary service-learning environment for students across health science programs at UNC-Chapel Hill. To achieve its mission, SHAC partners with communities to develop and implement sustainable programs to improve access to health care for those who need it.<\/p>\n<p>Second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student Matt Chaus recently transitioned out of his role as physical therapy representative. Chaus said that SHAC taught him about interdisiplinary health care and to manage goals and expectations when working together on patient-centered clinical care. \u201cIt has really shaped me from a communication standpoint,\u201d Chaus said. \u201cI believe SHAC does a fantastic job working with patients from different socioeconomic backgrounds and how to best acknowledge these when working toward treatment goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Student work at SHAC is supervised\u00a0by licensed physical therapists, including faculty from the\u00a0Division of Physical Therapy, one of seven health science programs\u00a0in the Department of Allied Health Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>First-year Doctor of Physical Therapy students Hannah Zimmer and Sam Ward are both looking forward to sharing knowledge with fellow classmates and joining a decades-long line of other health care providers who have volunteered at SHAC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe service to others and the community is an integral part of education and professional work,\u201d Zimmer said. \u201c\u2018I believe a woman who serves is a woman who leads,\u2019 is a motto I try to abide by in my personal and professional life, and taking an active and consistent role in SHAC is the perfect opportunity to serve and lead within the realm of physical therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward will serve as SHAC\u2019s physical therapy clinic manager. \u201cIt will allow me to dive headfirst into working directly with patients who may benefit greatly from physical therapy,\u201d Ward said. \u201cIt will also give me the opportunity to collaborate with a number of other health care professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward said he benefits most when finding opportunities to learn from others in an interprofessional environment. \u201cWhether at SHAC or any other clinic or hospital in the world, well-rounded patient care suffers when health care providers do not take an interdisciplinary view.\u00a0There is no one-size-fits-all approach that benefits everyone equally, so we must take it upon ourselves to learn what others might be able to do for a patient,\u201d Ward said.<\/p>\n<p>Ward said SHAC is a perfect embodiment of the University\u2019s commitment to serve underserved populations across North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood and affordable health care starts at the local level,\u201d Ward said. \u201cI wholeheartedly look forward to providing high-quality care for as many people as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC), a student-led organization that provides health services at no cost to local uninsured and underinsured populations, has selected its incoming cohort of student leaders from the Division of Physical Therapy.
