Kaylene King, a third-year Doctor of Audiology student in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences<\/a>, will present at the 16th Symposium on Cochlear Implants in Children<\/a>, to be held in July 2019 and hosted by the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. King has also received a 2019 student scholarship award.<\/p>\n

Previously, King works with Drs. Lisa Park, Meg Dillon, and Meredith Rooth at the UNC-CH cochlear implant clinical research lab<\/a>. “This has given me the perfect outlet for my love for working with patients and my drive to think critically about issues that still exist in the cochlear implant realm and the possible solutions we could discover,” King said.<\/p>\n

At the symposium, King’s presentation will focus on children who hear with a hearing aid in one ear and a cochlear implant in another when compared to children who hear with a cochlear implant in both ears when attempting to understand speech in the presence of background noise. King hopes her research will present objective data that can provide insight as to whether a child will benefit most from a hearing aid or if they can reach their highest hearing potential with a second cochlear implant.<\/p>\n
