2020.

What a beautiful number. 20-20. 2.0.2.0.There’s got to be something special about this year, don’t you think? It’s like Earth Version 2.0, twice. As if there is so much to fix that rather than simply coming up with a second version, we’re going straight to the second version of the second version. Because this year we can look back and truly recognize what needs to change, since hindsight is twenty twenty!

No, but seriously. The third decade of the 3rd millennium. Who would’ve thought we’d make it this far? And I’m not talking about HHA and it’s 19th year as an organization (we all knew HHA would make it this far! We just weren’t sure whether it was going to win the Nobel Peace Prize this year…. now we’re thinking that will probably be in 2027, give or take). I’m talking about humanity. Yes, I know we’re running out of time with global warming, but something about the sound of twenty twenty makes it feel like we’ve made it long enough to finally be in the future. That future where things change and progress. That future where new ideas and novelty are the norm. That future where people suddenly realize that caring about the environment and people in far away places is important now and not soon or in 50 years or for the next generation. Important not out of principle, but because of the immediate impact that everything in the world has on everything else. I always imagined that in a year like twenty twenty, that impact would no longer be blurred by time, geography and politics, but suddenly become crystal clear, vivid and tangible for everyone. Twenty twenty.

The Actual News

Alright, enough preamble. Aside from melodramatic, confusing and inconclusive thought spirals, twenty twenty also ushers in a fresh batch of medical students, residents and attending doctors on the HHA team! WELCOME HHA 2020! To all of you at HHA 2020, thank you for doing this, because many of us care about these women in Honduras, but not all of us want to go to Honduras. So thank you for being our ambassadors, you guys ROCK.

HHA 2020 has a lot of work ahead of them as they get ready for the trip in June and July. One of the first and most immediate items on their list is raising the money. Yep, you know it. Turns out, neither the students nor the women in Honduras have it, so HHA 2020 is planning to raise hel- ‘scuse me- raise a racket to get it. I don’t think they’re planning to be rude, but they’re definitely not planning to be shy, because this is real good thing to spend money on. I’m telling you, there isn’t a thing in a store you can buy that will be quite your money’s worth like this. So, I’m asking you, dear reader, old friend, if you know someone with a penny to spare or a penny too much (we all have our opinions), tell them to push this button right here and all those nice people in the picture are going to be really grateful, and someone else is in Honduras is going to be both grateful AND healthier.

That’s enough for today, but don’t you worry! That’s not the end of hearing about HHA 2020. We’ll be following along the throughout the spring as they get ready and, of course, every detail of their trip in the summer.
