Understand Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Veins<\/strong> are the blood vessels that carry blood <strong>back to the heart<\/strong>.\u00a0 Clots which occur in the veins may be referred to by different names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>venous thromboembolism (or VTE for short)<\/li>\n<li>venous thrombosis<\/li>\n<li>venous clot<\/li>\n<li>vein clot<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these terms describe a blood clot which has occurred in a vein.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 600px; height: 480px;\" title=\"Vein Clot\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/711\/2018\/05\/image_large\" alt=\"Vein Clot\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)<\/h2>\n<p>A blood clot which forms in a deep vein of the body is called <strong>Deep Vein Thrombosis<\/strong>,\u00a0 often referred to as DVT for short.<\/p>\n<p>Deep vein thrombosis can be difficult to identify because symptoms may be subtle and can be similar to other health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Deep vein thrombosis can occur anywhere in the body, but is most common in the leg.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"color: red;\">Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) can include:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Pain:\u00a0 typically in one leg, may range from feeling a mild heaviness, to moderate discomfort, to severe pain<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Swelling:\u00a0 of the legs, ankles or feet<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Discoloration:\u00a0 bluish, puplish or redish skin discoloration<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Warmth:\u00a0 leg may be warm to the touch <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, about half of the people who develop deep vein thrombosis experience no noticeable symptoms at all.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Pulmonary Embolism<\/h2>\n<p>A life-threatening complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)\u00a0 is pulmonary embolism, often referred to as PE.<\/p>\n<p>A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot breaks off, travels through the blood stream and lodges in the lung.\u00a0 If a clot is large enough to stop blood flow, it can be fatal.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"200\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pulmonary Embolism Small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/711\/2018\/05\/PE-Infarct-2.jpg\" alt=\"Pulmonary Embolism Small\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" \/><\/td>\n<td>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pulmonary Embolism Massive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/711\/2018\/05\/Massive-PE.jpg\" alt=\"Pulmonary Embolism Massive\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em> definition:\u00a0 infarct = death of tissue <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"color: red;\">Symptoms of Pulmonary Embolism (PE) can include:<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Shortness of breath:\u00a0 may be sudden<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Chest pain:\u00a0 sharp may be worse with deep breath<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Unexplained cough:\u00a0 sometimes may cough up blood<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Rapid heart rate<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 120%;\">Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism requires immediate medical attention.\u00a0Once a clot has moved to the lungs, one in ten people die within the first hour, so rapid diagnosis and treatment is crucial.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t delay. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Graphic designs by\u00a0 Jeff Harrison, Stephan Moll\u00ae <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 110%;\">NEXT TOPIC:\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"\/htcenter\/patient-care\/clotting-disorders\/blood-clot-education-1\/are-you-at-risk-for-developing-at-blood-clot\"><span style=\"font-size: 110%;\">Are you at risk for developing at blood clot? <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learn the signs, symptoms and risk factors for blood clots in the veins (venous clots).
