Understand why certain medications are used for clots in the arteries while others are used for clots in the veins.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>There are differences between clots which occur in the arteries and clots which occur in veins.<\/p>\n<h2>Differences between Arterial and Venous Clots<\/h2>\n<table style=\"width: 772px; height: 363px;\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Arteries<\/strong> are the blood vessels through which the blood flows <strong>from the heart<\/strong> into the periphery: into the brain, the internal organs, the legs and the arms.<\/p>\n<p>A clot in an artery leads to stroke, TIA (mini-stroke), heart attack, or peripheral arterial clot and gangrene (painful, cold, and pale digits or a whole extremity, later turning black).<\/td>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Arterial Clot\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/711\/2018\/05\/Clotarterial.jpg\" alt=\"Arterial Clot\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Vein Clot\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/711\/2018\/05\/clotvein.jpg\" alt=\"Vein Clot\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" \/><\/td>\n<td><strong>Veins<\/strong> are the blood vessels that carry blood <strong>back to the heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A clot in the deep veins of legs, arms, abdomen or around the brain is called <strong>deep vein thrombosis (also called DVT for short)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If a piece of clot from a leg or arm DVT breaks off it can travel into the lung, causing a <strong>pulmonary embolism (PE)<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>What are blood clots made of?<\/h2>\n<table style=\"width: 708px; height: 398px;\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Blood clots are made up of little particles called platelets and a meshwork of protein strands, called fibrin.\u00a0Clots in arteries have a different composition than clots in veins.<\/p>\n<p>Clots in arteries are mostly made up of platelets (figure 3).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Clots in veins mostly made up of fibrin.\u00a0 (figure 4)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Clot Composition\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/711\/2018\/05\/clotartvein.jpg\" alt=\"Clot Composition\" width=\"400\" height=\"195\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Medications<\/h2>\n<table style=\"width: 701px; height: 75px;\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Platelets are made slick and prevented from sticking together to form a clot by aspirin, Plavix\u00ae, Aggrenox\u00ae, Ibuprofen and a whole variety of so-called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Since platelets are the ones that mostly cause the clots in arteries, aspirin and these drugs are good to prevent clots in arteries.<\/p>\n<p>Since platelets do not play much of a role in the clots in veins, aspirin is not very (if at all) useful to prevent clots in veins, such as DVT and PE. Heparin and warfarin ( Coumadin\u00ae ) are good in preventing fibrin from forming. They are, therefore, very effective drugs in preventing blood clots in veins from forming. Since fibrin also plays some role in clot formation in arteries, heparin and warfarin are also useful drugs in preventing artery clots.
