{"id":4828,"date":"2023-08-10T10:23:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T14:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/?page_id=4828"},"modified":"2025-07-29T12:43:06","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T16:43:06","slug":"school-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/resources\/school-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"School Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Accommodation Examples within 504 Plan\/IEP for a Student with a Bleeding Disorder<\/h2>\n<h3>Accommodations for onset of new bleeding<\/h3>\n<p>(Examples: nosebleed, injury, spontaneous, menstruation)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call parent\/guardian immediately if there is a bleeding event<\/li>\n<li>School staff must respond to student\u2019s verbal complaints about possible Symptoms may include: pain, tingling, swelling, warm feeling, limping, limited movement a joint<\/li>\n<li>Allow student to go to the bathroom to change pads\/clothes as needed<\/li>\n<li>Permission\/clearance provided by parent for school to take photos of bruises\/swelling to send to parent\/guardian to assist with bleeding\/injury evaluation. <em>Not including private areas or genitals<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Circle bruises on outer skin with marker to see if bruise increases in size<\/li>\n<li>Student should not sit in the nurse\u2019s office for long period of time to see if bleed is getting worse prior to contacting parent.<\/li>\n<li>Excused absences provided due to bleeding:\n<ul>\n<li>Note to school provided by Hemophilia Treatment Center<\/li>\n<li>Notes for classes or missed work to be provided to student<\/li>\n<li>Student allowed to turn in assignments late or make up testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Accommodations for return to school after bleeding event or while resolving<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>While recovering from bleeding event, student may require activity modification or assistive device use throughout school.<\/li>\n<li>Devices may include: wheelchair, walker, crutches<\/li>\n<li>Modified recess or PE participation<\/li>\n<li>Changing in seating location or modified chair<\/li>\n<li>Writing assistance\/scribe<\/li>\n<li>Parental choice for participation in activities.<\/li>\n<li>No contact or high risk sports during Physical Education class<\/li>\n<li>Student is allowed to take prescribed medication and self-administer if student has the skill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Accommodations for student with a central line<\/h3>\n<p>(Examples: Port, Broviac, PICC line)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If student has a fever, call parent\/guardian immediately.<\/li>\n<li>If damage to the central line location occurs, check for overt signs of disruption, bleeding, swelling, pain, and bruising.<\/li>\n<li>Photo of port can be taken and sent to parent\/guardian if damage to port has occurred<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Accommodation Examples within 504 Plan\/IEP for a Student with a Bleeding Disorder Accommodations for onset of new bleeding (Examples: nosebleed, injury, spontaneous, menstruation) Call parent\/guardian immediately if there is a bleeding event School staff must respond to student\u2019s verbal complaints about possible Symptoms may include: pain, tingling, swelling, warm feeling, limping, limited movement a joint &hellip;
