Digestive Disease Week is the world’s largest professional meeting on gastrointestinal disorders, held annually at different locations all across the United States. This year, it is held in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention Center from May 18 – 21.

This meeting brings together thousands of practicing gastroenterologists, postdoctoral fellows, nurses, pharmaceutical companies, clinic managers, allied health professionals, researchers, and many other individuals involved in the field of gastroenterology. DDW provides researchers an opportunity to report on and display the research findings from the past year. Every year, the Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders submits abstracts for publication, of which a majority are accepted for publication. The accepted abstracts are presented at the conference as oral presentations or posters where all attendees have the opportunity to ask the researcher(s) questions about their results. The meeting is also an important opportunity for researchers to network and collaborate for future research endeavors. Pharmaceutical companies and equipment manufacturers have the opportunity at the meeting to speak to researchers and clinicians about new research findings and potential new clinical trials for new drugs, therapies, diagnostic equipment, or medical devices. A full list of accepted abstracts and posters by our Center investigators can be found here and more information about DDW and all the presenters from around the United States and worldwide can be found here.

Dr. Olafur Palsson will be blogging live from DDW to highlight new research discoveries in the area of functional gastrointestinal disorders. This provides patients with functional GI disorders first-hand insight into new research discoveries for diagnostic criteria and questionnaires, diagnostic exams and tests, treatment options, and basic science research in these disorders.

Dr. Yehuda Ringel will be giving an oral presentation on “Targeting the Microbiome in the treatment of GI Disorders” and “Molecular Characterization of the Intestinal Microbiota in Patients with and without Abdominal Bloating.” Dr. Yolanda Scarlett will be giving an oral presentation on “Constipation: Diagnosis and Management with the Pelvic Floor is the Culprit.” Drs. William Whitehead, Olafur Palsson, Miranda van Tilburg, and research assistant Sung Min Kim, BS will be presenting posters at DDW as well.
