A Message From the Chief

On our website, you will learn about our clinical, research, and education programs, as well as general information about our faculty and our division. We are proud of the work that we are doing and thank you for your interest in UNC General Medicine.

We provide comprehensive primary care services at two faculty practices, one at Eastowne and one at Panther Creek. Both locations provide state of the art multidisciplinary care that includes clinical pharmacists, licensed therapists, and care managers.  We provide medication for opioid use disorder for those who need it.  Many of our providers are trained in gender affirming care.  We welcome patients from all walks of life and provide non-judgmental care aligned with our patients’ values.  Although we care for the full spectrum of primary care for adults, we specialize in patients with complex needs. We are expert clinicians and work closely with specialist colleagues to provide coordinated care. Above all else, we value relationships with our patients.

Our research mission flows from our clinical experience.  When we see challenges in care delivery, it inspires our researchers to seek solutions that make health care work better.  Many of our faculty are internationally renowned for research in cancer prevention, food insecurity and other social determinants of health, nutrition and physical activity, health equity, health literacy, quality improvement, palliative care, and patient reported outcomes.  Our faculty lead reviews of evidence that inform the United States Preventive Services Task Force.  We provide training for general medicine research in collaboration with the NRSA primary care research fellowship.

The Division of General Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology is home to many of the most distinguished medical educators at UNC. Many of our faculty lead undergraduate medical education courses and all our faculty teach students and residents in our faculty practices.  With some of the most talented students and residents in the country, our faculty help to shape tomorrow’s workforce.  Working in a teaching environment ensures that we stay up to date with the latest strategies for diagnosis and care delivery.

We are a vibrant division and would welcome the opportunity to work with you as a patient, learner, or colleague.

We thank you for visiting our website and look forward to seeing you in person in Chapel Hill!

Sincerely

Darren DeWalt, MD, MPH
