We are excited to relaunch our newsletter as a resource and communication tool for current Kenan Rural Primary Care Scholars and Alumni. Our hope is this newsletter will keep you connected to UNC SOM rural initiatives and provide rural-specific resources in addition to what you receive from the Alumni association (if you are alumni).

The newsletter will provide information on current events in NC, upcoming national events you may be interested in attending, and programs happening around campus regarding rural initiatives. We hope this will be helpful as you progress through medical school, residency, and into practice.

If you have items you would like to see included in future newsletters, or ideas as we continue to grow and explore ways to share relevant news, please email

Introducing the 2020 Kenan Primary Care Rural Scholars

It is with great enthusiasm we announce the 2020 class of Kenan Rural Primary Care Scholars. They represent every region of our state hailing from the coast to the mountains and with interest and hobbies including hiking, piano playing, and board games. We are excited to support this new cohort as they begin their path to rural service.

Remembering Dr. Robert A. Bashford

Robert BashfordWe would be remiss not to acknowledge the great loss of our beloved Associate Dean Dr. Robert Bashford. We miss his large personality and his knack for telling the best stories and we also miss his leadership. We in the Office or Rural Initiatives remain committed to the work and will continue to provide the support Dr. Bashford would’ve desired for each of you as you move towards your goal of being amazing rural practitioners.

We would like you to know UNC SOM leadership is taking your survey responses into consideration as they move to identify future leadership for ORI. If you haven’t completed the survey please do so ASAP.
