First Generation Medical Students

The Office of Rural Initiatives is excited to support the F1rst Gen Fellows Program, led by Dr. Tiffany Long, Heather Swain, and Christina Orantes. This program brings together a supportive network of peers, mentors, and resources, as well as a safe space to discuss their unique challenges. With funding support from the Office of Rural Initiatives and partnership support from the Office of Special Programs in connection with faculty and staff who identify as first-generation, UNC School of Medicine seeks to provide visible support for students who identify as first-generation students. We host workshops and socials throughout the year catered to addressing challenges faced by first-gen medical students and providing opportunities to meet other fellow first-gens.

If you are a current medical student who identifies as first-generation (defined as first in the family to graduate with a college degree) and are interested in joining our program, please email Morgan McCain (morgan_mccain@med.unc.edu) to be added to our Canvas page for more information.

If you are an incoming student, or interested applicant, looking to learn more about how the UNC School of Medicine supports and celebrates first-generation students, feel free to use the Get Involved page and we can connect you to current students participating in the program.

If you are faculty or staff, and interested in becoming a mentor for the program, please email Dr. Tiffany Long (tiffany.long@med.unc.edu) or Heather Swain (heather_swain@med.unc.edu).
