First Generation Medical Students

The Office of Rural Initiatives is excited to support the First Gen Fellows Program, led by Dr. Kelly Smith and BT Parker. This program brings together a supportive network of peers, mentors, and resources, as well as a safe space to discuss their unique challenges. With funding support from the Office of Rural Initiatives and partnership support from the Office of Special Programs in connection with faculty and staff who identify as first-generation, UNC School of Medicine seeks to provide visible support for students who identify as first-generation students.

If you are a current medical student who identifies as first-generation (defined as first in the family to graduate with a college degree) and are interested in joining monthly meetings, please email Felicia Crawford ( to be added to the email list for more information.

If you are an incoming student, or interested applicant, interested in learning more about how UNC School of Medicine supports and celebrates first-generation students, feel free to use the Get Involved page and we can connect you to current students participating in the program.

If you are faculty or staff, and interested in becoming a mentor for the program, please email Dr. Kelly Smith ( or BT Parker (
