MED gained national recognition as a model for increasing excellence in healthcare education and addressing health disparities. It has been cited in numerous studies and reports as an example of best practices in health disparities education. MED plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of healthcare leaders committed to serving the medical needs of NC communities.
INNOVATION
The program has continued to innovate and adapt to changing needs and priorities in healthcare education. It has implemented new initiatives, such as summer pathway programs for middle and high school students and partnerships with undergraduate institutions, to reach a broader range of aspiring healthcare professionals.
ENGAGEMENT
From it’s inception, active engagement with local communities to address healthcare disparities and promote health equity has been a core mission of MED. This has included outreach efforts, health education initiatives, and partnerships with community-based organizations to improve access to healthcare service and resources.
Our Impact & Alumni Successes
Many alumni of the UNC MED Summer program have gone on to become successful healthcare professionals, including physicians, dentists, researchers, educators, and leaders in their fields. Their accomplishments serve as a testament to the program’s impact and effectiveness in nurturing talent and fostering excellence in the healthcare workforce.
For the past two decades, Richmond County native, Dr. Allen Green Mask has been a member of WRAL’s Health Team, serving as a Health Team Reporter. His practice, Raleigh Urgent Care Center, opened in 1985 and is the oldest continuing Urgent Care Center in Wake County to remain open under the same management. Dr. Mask also serves as the City of Raleigh Physician and Physician to the Artists for Live Nation, Inc. Combining his role as a physician and journalist, he has won numerous awards for his medical stories which appear on the evening newscasts. Dr. Mask graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelors of Arts in English and as a Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and an Anesthesiology Residency at UNC-Ch School of Medicine. His awards and recognitions include: Morehead Scholars Selection Committee, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Medicine, the Media and Technology Award, UNC-CH School of Medicine; “The Heart of It Award” from the American Heart Association for broadcast series on heart disease; Hall of Distinction, African-American Cultural Complex; Board of Trustees, St. Augustine’s University, Raleigh; Board of Trustees, Methodist University, Fayetteville; Board of Trustees, Cary Academy, Cary; Board of Advisors, North Carolina Theater, Raleigh; Board of Health Advisors, Elon University, Elon; Board of Advisors, Triangle American Heart Association; Board of Advisors, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center’ State Health Chair, N.C. NAACP State Conference.
Dr. Roslyn Moore Crisp has more than 38 years of experience in dentistry. She knew from a very early age that dentistry was her career ambition. A native of Burlington, Dr. Crisp graduated from Walter M. Williams High School. Following high school, she attended and graduated cum laude from Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga. After receiving a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University Of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry, she remained in Chapel Hill and completed a residency program, and received a Master of Science degree in pediatric dentistry. She further distinguished herself by becoming a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Crisp is the proud mother of two sons, Dr. H. Alexander Crisp and Dr. Benjamin G. Crisp. Her hobbies and interests are varied. She enjoys music, art, travel, and sports. Most of all, she enjoys learning new things. She is passionate about giving back to the community through volunteer efforts, especially as they pertain to the improvement of dental health.
DR WILLIAM LAWRENCE
Tiffany Long, MD is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is a first-generation college student. She completed the MED program in the summer of 2012 and then after acceptance into UNC School of Medicine, she was a teaching assistant in the MED program during the summer of 2015. She went on to pursue residency training at UNC in Internal Medicine, Fellowship Training at UNC in Geriatric Medicine and is now a faculty member at UNC in the division of Geriatrics. Dr. Long has a passion for teaching and mentoring medical students and this passion ignited during her summer teaching in the MED program. She currently teaches a clinical skills course for students in their 1st and 2nd year of medical school, serves as an academic coach in the office of student affairs, and is the faculty lead for the F1rst Generation Fellows Program at UNC. Clinically she loves working with older adults and their families and is able to take care of patients in all levels of care including clinic, the hospital, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and long-term care. She loves educating and getting medical students interested in Geriatric Medicine.
Dr. Ruiz is originally from a small town in Mexico and grew up in North Carolina. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill for undergraduate and completed medical school at UNC School of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency training and Family Medicine High Risk Obstetrics fellowship at Ventura County Medical Center. He currently works at the Chatham Maternity Care Center and Chatham Hospital. His clinic is based out of PHS-Siler City Community Health Center, one of the sites for the UNC Family Medicine Residency Rural Health Track. When he is not at work, he enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, running, and mentoring first generation college & DACA students.
Dr. F. Vincent Allison III was born and raised in Durham, NC where he graduated with honors from Hillside High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree (Cum Laude) from Morehouse College in Atlanta GA. He then went on to attend the University of North Carolina School Of Dentistry in Chapel Hill, NC where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree. He began practicing dentistry in 1987 at The Bertie Citizens’ Family Dental Clinic in Windsor, NC. In 1992 he became the Dental Director of Stedman Family Dental Center in Stedman, NC; a division of Stedman-Wade Health Services, Inc. Dr. Allison returned to Durham in 2001 to begin a private Family & Cosmetic Dental Practice. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University Of North Carolina School Of Dentistry. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Allison also serves as Dental Director of the SNDA CAARES Free Dental Clinic. The SNDA CAARES Clinic, located in downtown Durham provides free urgent dental care to the uninsured most Tuesday evenings. The care is provided by Dental Students from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.
