Please see below for a message from SOM Director of Research Integrity and Compliance Heather Skinner, JD, regarding new compliance tools available to support researchers.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research recently announced that the iThenticate software is now available to faculty, post docs, graduate students, and research staff. iThenticate is the premier plagiarism detection software that is designed to be used by researchers to screen written work for originality and copyright compliance. Users can easily upload and scan documents, manuscripts, research and other professional works. While the software will compare against 96% of the top 10,000 cited journals, it will never store, share, or resell any of your uploaded files.

Using iThenticate is optional, however, I highly encourage it as it allows users to capture and modify potential issues prior to submission. The process is simple and relatively quick, taking approximately 5-15 minutes to scan each document. The user can then review the results and evaluate identified similarities in the scanned document relative to identified source documents, giving the opportunity to make necessary corrections.

In the coming weeks, there will be several training sessions announced to fit a variety of schedules. Additionally, I am available to support the SOM community in learning and using the software. Please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance as finding an issue prior to submission does not result in adverse implications.

Please visit the OVCR dedicated webpage, which includes training videos, guides, the University’s policy on plagiarism, and a link to Single Sign-On access. The SOM Research Compliance webpage will also contain valuable guidance.

LabArchives (Electronic Research Notebook)

LabArchives is a cloud-based content and data management solution which will assist researchers in storing and managing the results of research efforts as well as recording and documenting processes and procedures. It allows for managing digital research data in ways that increase productivity, reproducibility, efficiency, collaboration, searchability, as well as securely protecting research with automatic backups and comprehensive audit trails. LabArchives integrates with many popular endpoint solutions, permits customization, provides templates & dozens of entry types, as well as allowing for  easy two-way communication between lab staff.

The OVCR has purchased an unlimited storage license, which includes large file upload services enabling an individual file of up to 4 GB to be uploaded.

The OVCR is in the process of building a dedicated webpage, which will be shared upon completion.
