The Offices of Medical Student Education (OMSE) seeks a director for the Conclusion of Application Phase (CAP) course. The CAP is a 4 week course that occurs in the spring at the end of the MS3 clerkships and is a required component of the medical student curriculum.
The CAP course includes summative and formative assessments to ensure student readiness for increased independence in patient care during the Individualization Phase, as well as required preparatory elements for the Individualization Phase. Students will also engage in independent learning to prepare for USMLE Step 2. Summative assessments include OSCEs, skills stations, and the Family Medicine NBME Shelf exam. Additional course elements include course and phase orientations, dedicated time for residency application planning, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification, and an interprofessional experience coordinated with the Office of Interprofessional Education.
The course director will work closely with Curricular Affairs, Student Affairs, and other educational leaders to develop, implement, and continuously improve the course. The course director will report directly to the Assistant Dean of Clinical Curriculum and should be committed to curriculum evaluation and continuous quality improvement.
Candidates should have knowledge of the UNC School of Medicine curriculum, the interface of Student Affairs and Curricular Affairs, and competency-based education and assessment. Administrative support is available for this role.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Outcomes: Develop, design, and implement course-level objectives aligned with school educational objectives, competencies, and the SOM Medical Education Program Objectives.
- Content and Assessment: Develop curricular content and assessment methods appropriate for achieving course goals, including formative and summative assessments, standardized clinical encounters, skills-based activities, self-directed learning, and professionalism-related experiences.
- Integration and Coordination: Coordinate CAP content with other phase-specific courses and ensure alignment with the Individualization Phase and residency preparation activities.
- Review and Improvement: Participate in regular course review and revision using multiple measures, including student feedback and national norms of accomplishment, under the auspices of the Phase Committees and Education Committee.
- Administration: Ensure that SOM educational policies are followed within the course, including formative feedback, narrative assessment, and grade timeliness. Attend relevant Phase and Education Committee meetings and work collaboratively with course, phase, and student affairs leadership to ensure effective implementation.
Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of the current UNC School of Medicine curriculum and competency-based education and assessment. The course director will receive 10% salary support up to the educational salary cap on an annual basis, with salary support beginning September 2026. Ideal candidates will be interviewed in July 2026, with final selection by the end of July.
