Maureen Kohi, MD, the Ernest H. Wood Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology, and system executive medical director of enterprise imaging and clinical transformation executive for UNC Health, has accepted a role as chair of the department of radiology at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC.
Dr. Kohi joined the UNC faculty in 2020 as chair of the department and since then has led major growth in clinical care, research, education and enterprise imaging. Under her leadership, UNC Radiology expanded its clinical footprint, faculty, revenue and imaging services across the health system. In that time, the department has more than doubled extramural research funding, becoming the highest-ranked radiology program in North Carolina, as well as one of the nation’s top public radiology departments in NIH rankings.
She co-founded the department’s Consortium for Innovative Imaging and Interventions (CI³), which advances imaging, artificial intelligence engineering and image-guided therapies.
An internationally recognized interventional radiologist and clinical trialist, Dr. Kohi’s work focuses on precision medicine, imaging innovation, artificial intelligence and minimally invasive therapies, with an emphasis on improving women’s health. Her research spans translational imaging science, AI-enabled diagnostics and novel image-guided treatments.
Dr. Kohi has held numerous national and international leadership roles, including chair of the SIR Foundation, member of the SIR Board of Directors and president of the Western Angiographic and Interventional Society. She has also served in leadership roles with the American Heart Association, RSNA, SIR and the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research.
Her editorial and scientific leadership includes serving as scientific chair of the 2022 SIR Annual Scientific Meeting, deputy editor of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, and associate editor of RSNA’s Radiology: Imaging Cancer. She received the 2025 SIR Women in Interventional Radiology Champion Award and the 2023 WAIS Tom Dorsey Gold Medal, among the field’s highest honors.
