Daniel Prevedello, MD, MBA, has been announced as the next chair of the department of neurosurgery. He will arrive in Chapel Hill in October to begin work in this role.
“I am extremely pleased that Dr. Danny Prevedello will be joining our community as the new chair of neurosurgery and a co-leader in the neurosciences service line,” said Samantha Meltzer-Brody, MD, MPH, executive dean of the UNC School of Medicine and chief academic officer of UNC Health. “His abundant leadership skills and highly collaborative approach will play a vital role in moving our tripartite mission forward in the SOM and UNC Health.”
Dr. Prevedello is currently a professor and senior academic leader at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He serves as the vice chair of academic affairs in the department of neurological surgery and holds academic appointments in the departments of neurological surgery and otolaryngology–head and neck surgery.
Recognized widely for his clinical excellence, Dr. Prevedello has received several professional distinctions, including American Board of Neurological Surgeons certification, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons designation, selection for Castle Connolly Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America, and induction into OSU’s Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians.
Dr. Prevedello is internationally recognized for his expertise in skull base and pituitary surgery, completing fellowship training in cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as fellowship training in pituitary surgery and epilepsy at the University of Virginia.
He has held several national leadership roles with the North American Skull Base Society and currently serves as its president-elect. His prior service with the society includes roles as vice president, secretary, member-at-large of the executive committee and co-chair of the scientific committee.
He has also made contributions to growing the base of neurosurgical knowledge through his editorial leadership, serving as editor-in-chief of Neurosurgery Review, associate editor for the Journal of Neurosurgery, and holding editorial roles with Operative Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery and other specialty journals.

Weatherspoon Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery and inaugural chair of the department of neurosurgery, who has served as the interim department chair since May.
