This summer, several UNC Health Ingram Institute SERVE (Students Exploring Regional Vocational Experiences in Healthcare) pathway programs teamed with UNC School of Medicine programs and local community colleges to give students and educators across North Carolina hands-on opportunities to explore health care careers, connect with local resources, and experience the impact of academic medicine firsthand.
CampMed programs, led by Ingram’s SERVE Pathways, Nicole Cornett, Edye Barbour, and Jackson Beane, connected rising ninth- through 12th-grade students with weeklong summer experiences focused on health care career exploration. The programs were hosted in partnership with AHEC; Brunswick, Chatham, Orange and Rockingham county school districts; and Brunswick, Rockingham, Central Carolina and Durham Tech community colleges.
The camps gave students opportunities to participate in simulation activities, community service, hospital tours and other learning experiences. Each program was held at its regional community college, helping students see local pathways into health care careers.
The Healthcare Pathways Program for Transfer Students welcomed its second cohort of C-STEP (Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program) students to campus for a five-week research lab experience. The program is led by Laura Ott, PhD, and Jean DeSaix, PhD, with Leslie Wilhoit serving as program coordinator. Participants who are enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill this fall and have an interest in health care gained hands-on research experience and presented their work at an end-of-summer symposium. Students will continue to receive advising and participate in cohort activities throughout their two years at UNC.
The TarHeal Tour brought High School CTE Health Science Teachers from across the state to UNC Health Chapel and UNC School of Medicine for a day to learn more about School of Medicine programs, connect with faculty and gather information to better support students interested in health care pathways. The program is offered in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Together, these programs reflect UNC Health and UNC School of Medicine’s commitment to building awareness of health care careers, strengthening educational partnerships and supporting students as they explore future opportunities in medicine, research and service.
