Genevieve Woodard, MD, PhD, has been named interim chair of the Department of Radiology. She succeeds Maureen Kohi, MD, who accepted a position as chair of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC. Dr. Woodard will begin work in the role on Oct. 1.
Dr. Woodard currently serves as executive vice chair of the department. Her previous leadership roles include vice chair of operations, division chief of breast imaging, and medical director of imaging and radiation safety officer at UNC Health Chatham Hospital.
A physician-scientist in breast imaging, Dr. Woodard integrates clinical care, image interpretation, patient-centered intervention and translational research to improve breast cancer detection and outcomes.
Her clinical expertise spans breast cancer screening, supplemental screening for patients with dense breast tissue or elevated risk, and breast imaging for gender-diverse patients. She also works to reduce barriers to care, promote cultural sensitivity and create a welcoming imaging environment for all patients.
Her research focuses on improving breast cancer detection, clinical workforce optimization, and breast procedure safety. Current projects include identifying factors that influence mammography technologist job satisfaction to improve local recruitment and retention, as well as studying hematoma formation after image-guided breast biopsies during a recent epinephrine shortage.
Dr. Woodard is dedicated to educating patients, technologists, residents and fellows in mammography, image interpretation, ultrasound scanning and biopsy techniques, strengthening clinical practice and screening awareness.
Dr. Woodard completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned MD and PhD degrees and conducted doctoral research in epidemiology and subclinical cardiovascular disease. She completed her diagnostic radiology residency and breast imaging fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
She is board certified by the American Board of Radiology, holds active North Carolina licensure, completed Mayo Clinic Quality Fellow Bronze Level Certification and is participating in the SCARD/GE HealthCare LEAD Leadership Program.
