If that happens, here are a few things to keep in mind courtesy of Abhi Mehrotra, MD, in Emergency Medicine, and Tom Shanahan, UNC Health\u2019s Chief Legal Officer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most in-flight emergencies are managed by the flight attendants and other crew members and will not require additional assistance from a medical professional.<\/li>\n<li>The most common in-flight emergencies are near syncope, GI and respiratory complaints.<\/li>\n<li>When flying, it\u2019s a good idea to bring a copy of your medical license, or at least a business card. The airline crew may need to determine who can best help.<\/li>\n<li>Approach a patient as you would normally: introduce yourself, let them know your medical qualifications, take a history and get vital signs.\u00a0Share your recommendations with the crew.<\/li>\n<li>As you consider treatment options, be assured that most US-based airlines will also contact their ground-based medical team. You are an important link between the patient, the ground medical team and the airline crew as the pilot (who makes the ultimate decision) considers if an adjusted flight plan is needed.<\/li>\n<li>Document the clinical information and care provided to the extent you are able. The airline may provide a form.<\/li>\n<li>We all worry about legal protection.\u00a0While Good Samaritan laws and protections vary by state and may not cover each specific situation, such laws provide immunity from civil liability for any individual who, in good faith, attempts to help someone who is injured or experiencing a medical emergency.<\/li>\n<li>When traveling on a plane in the United States, remember your help as a medical volunteer is covered under a federal law called the \u201cAviation Medical Assistance Act.\u201d It is understood that at 30,000 feet, your resources are limited and that you are doing the best you can within the scope of your training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope your travels are uneventful and your vacations are amazing, but it\u2019s always good to be prepared &#8211; many of our physicians, including me, my wife and Dr. Burks have served as the doc on the plane!<\/p>\n<p>While I have you, three more key updates for June include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Leading in AI:<\/strong> We\u2019re receiving national attention for our work with Artificial Intelligence \u2013 see recent examples from <a href=\"https:\/\/start.emailopen.com\/public1\/r.aspx?s1=4550547&amp;s2=Gd3x4CLi62Kfr5R&amp;s4=400852&amp;s5=9c558f1018164065a1c7eb17280e963d83XKKINlE4Kc8M5.760907668@emailopen.com\">Healthcare IT News<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/start.emailopen.com\/public1\/r.aspx?s1=4550548&amp;s2=Wo32Rjg8GTb97Kf&amp;s4=400852&amp;s5=9c558f1018164065a1c7eb17280e963d83XKKINlE4Kc8M5.760907668@emailopen.com\">Becker\u2019s<\/a>, and please email us at <a href=\"mailto:uncphysicians@unchealth.unc.edu\">uncphysicians@unchealth.unc.edu<\/a> to sign-up for <a href=\"https:\/\/start.emailopen.com\/public1\/r.aspx?s1=4550549&amp;s2=e9MNg4a5LZs67Wy&amp;s4=400852&amp;s5=9c558f1018164065a1c7eb17280e963d83XKKINlE4Kc8M5.760907668@emailopen.com\">our Epic@UNC Artificial Intelligence pilot program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Monthly Myth: <em>Why do we wait until someone leaves their position to begin trying to hire their replacement? <\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nWe don\u2019t &#8211; it\u2019s a myth! Clinical positions are posted as quickly as possible, often before the current teammate has departed. Non-clinical positions require approval by entity leadership prior to rehiring and may take longer to fill.<\/p>\n<p><u>The best way<\/u> to fill a position is to retain our current teammates. We have good news here \u2013 compared to last fiscal year, our <a href=\"https:\/\/start.emailopen.com\/public1\/r.aspx?s1=4550550&amp;s2=Er9y7GHx56Xjm4T&amp;s4=400852&amp;s5=9c558f1018164065a1c7eb17280e963d83XKKINlE4Kc8M5.760907668@emailopen.com\">retention rate<\/a> across UNC Health\u2019s owned entities has improved by 3% to approximately 77%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Masks Optional in Most Areas: <\/strong>I hope you saw our <a href=\"https:\/\/start.emailopen.com\/public1\/r.aspx?s1=4550551&amp;s2=Xf65NnLt8g7M9Pr&amp;s4=400852&amp;s5=9c558f1018164065a1c7eb17280e963d83XKKINlE4Kc8M5.760907668@emailopen.com\">recent announcement<\/a> that masks are now optional in most areas at our owned entities.
