The Surgery co-director will work with existing block surgery co-director to oversee the curricular content, organization, assessments, and evaluations for the Surgery Course. Surgery is a required 8-week course for the third-year medical students. The co-director must be committed to curriculum evaluation with the aim of continual quality improvement.<\/p>\n<p>The new co-director will partner with the existing co-director and coordinators with respect to the design, management, evaluation, and enhancement of the course. Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:<\/p>\n<p>Course\/Clerkship Director Responsibilities: responsibility for the overall design, management, integration, evaluation, and enhancement of the course\/clerkship, including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outcomes<\/strong>: Development, design, and implementation of the course, including course-level objectives linked to the school\u2019s educational objectives<\/li>\n<li>Align course content with SOM objectives<\/li>\n<li><strong>Content and Assessment:<\/strong> Curricular content, methods of pedagogy, and medical student assessment that are appropriate for achievement of the course and school\u2019s educational objectives<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integration and Coordination<\/strong>: Content sequencing with the course\/clerkship and horizontal and vertical integration of the course within the broader curriculum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review and Improvement:<\/strong> Regular review and revision of the course using multiple measures, including national norms of accomplishment and student feedback; this is done under the auspices of the appropriate phase Committee and Education Committee\n<ul>\n<li>Work with curricular deans and other course directors to innovate and improve curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supervision of Teaching:<\/strong> Review and enhance faculty and resident teaching in conjunction with the phase co-director. Direct teaching as appropriate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Faculty Development:<\/strong> Participation in bi-annual UNC School of Medicine Faculty Retreats<\/li>\n<li><strong>Administration:<\/strong> Ensure that SOM educational policies are being followed within the course e.g. formative feedback, narrative assessment, grade timeliness, duty hours etc. Serve on the appropriate phase committee as a voting member.\n<ul>\n<li>Attend all Application Phase meetings (If a course director cannot attend a Phase meeting, they must send a representative from the course to ensure robust communication)<\/li>\n<li>Course directors are accountable for the implementation of decisions made at Phase meetings and Education Committee meetings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that course coordinators are well-informed of policies and plans<\/li>\n<li>Maintain regular contact with all clinical site directors (based in Asheville, Charlotte, Wilmington, Greensboro, and Raleigh). Solicit their input and Inform them of changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Self-nominations as well as nominations by chairs, chiefs, or colleagues are welcome. Top candidates will be interviewed.
