Brian Thorp, MD, has been selected as UNC Faculty Physician\u2019s inaugural Vice President of Medical Affairs. He will begin his new role on January 1, 2026.<\/p>\n
As Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Thorp will collaborate with UNC Faculty Physicians President & CEO, Azita Hamedani, MD, MPH, MBA, and other senior leadership across UNC Faculty Physicians, the School of Medicine, UNC Hospitals, and the larger UNC Health System to advance the clinical portfolio of UNC FP\u2019s 20 clinical departments.<\/p>\n
In his new capacity, Dr. Thorp will play a vital role in supporting UNC Faculty Physicians\u2019 mission to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. His leadership will be instrumental in advancing key initiatives that promote collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across the health system. Dr. Thorp\u2019s focus on strengthening partnerships and driving excellence will help position UNC FP for ongoing success and growth.<\/p>\n
Dr. Thorp is a Professor in the department of Otolaryngology\/Head and Neck Surgery with a joint appointment in the department of Neurosurgery. He is currently the Otolaryngology Residency Program Director but will be stepping down from this position in anticipation of the responsibilities of his new role.<\/p>\n
Dr. Thorp first came to UNC in 2009 as a resident in Otolaryngology\/Head and Neck Surgery. During his time on the house staff, he won several awards, including the prestigious Cefalo House Officer Award in 2013-2014. Following residency, he completed the advanced rhinology, oncology, and open\/endoscopic skull base surgery fellowship at UNC before joining the faculty.<\/p>\n
Throughout the rigorous selection process, Dr. Thorp was repeatedly noted for his measured thoughtfulness, disciplined decision making, and laser focus on advancing patient and provider experience. Dr. Thorp\u2019s commitment to excellence and passion for advancing medical education and patient care make him an outstanding choice to serve as FP\u2019s inaugural Vice President of Medical Affairs.
