{"id":2810,"date":"2016-11-11T16:54:09","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T21:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/iris\/iris\/index\/flip\/anemic-angel\/"},"modified":"2018-08-03T14:15:45","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T18:15:45","slug":"anemic-angel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/iris\/index\/flip\/anemic-angel\/","title":{"rendered":"Anemic Angel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">by Nisitha Sengottuvel, Hem\/Onc MD\/PhD Year 1<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Manjula had just began<\/p>\n<p>her fourth year of life,<\/p>\n<p>When her Pa orphaned her<\/p>\n<p>To be with his new wife.<\/p>\n<p>She found shelter on the ground<\/p>\n<p>and food on the street<\/p>\n<p>but she began falling ill<\/p>\n<p>and saw blood by her feet.<\/p>\n<p>The childhood fairness<\/p>\n<p>of her Nepali skin<\/p>\n<p>vanished slowly<\/p>\n<p>as yellowness set in.<\/p>\n<p>Her heart sped up<\/p>\n<p>as if in a race<\/p>\n<p>paleness set in, color<\/p>\n<p>gone from her face.<\/p>\n<p>She grew tired and sleepy\u2013<\/p>\n<p>became all around weak.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes felt heavy,<\/p>\n<p>pained even to take a peek.<\/p>\n<p>All the while<\/p>\n<p>rain poured down,<\/p>\n<p>over this child,<\/p>\n<p>and her home town.<\/p>\n<p>Breathing became harder<\/p>\n<p>as her body destroyed her blood.<\/p>\n<p>Still the rain didn\u2019t stop<\/p>\n<p>and the streets began to flood.<\/p>\n<p>Manjula\u2019s organs<\/p>\n<p>began losing air,<\/p>\n<p>reminding us all<\/p>\n<p>that life isn\u2019t fair<\/p>\n<p>After seven days,<\/p>\n<p>when storms had cleared<\/p>\n<p>What was left of Manjula<\/p>\n<p>had disappeared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Nisitha Sengottuvel, Hem\/Onc MD\/PhD Year 1 Manjula had just began her fourth year of life, When her Pa orphaned her To be with his new wife.
