Rocking chairs, stacks of books\u2014collections with your name on the front.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve read them all.<\/p>\n

You laugh when you bring me my plate, because you\u2019ve seen me read this one so many times.<\/p>\n

Again?<\/p>\n

Again.<\/p>\n

The fortieth time, I find something new, the same I\u2019ve done to you, my friend, each year of our marriage.<\/p>\n

Anniversaries don\u2019t have to be fancy for us.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it\u2019s best to simply let the memories roll around the synapses of our brain the same way we watch our cat roll in the grass.<\/p>\n

I say this aloud, and you laugh.<\/p>\n

Always the neuroscientist, always the one with silly medical analogies ready to slide off my tongue any minute.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t changed at all.<\/p>\n

You haven\u2019t either, at least not on the inside.<\/p>\n

Outwardly, you have been nothing but <\/i>change, and every single day of a deepened voice, the first time you could grow a beard, the hours I sat beside you in the bed while you recovered from the joy of removal\u2014<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t change, or forget, a single one.<\/p>\n

The name, the body you\u2019ve made for yourself\u2014it was really you all along, just hiding deep in the person I met back in grad school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
