Most rooms are equipped with a Windows 7 Computer for your convenience. The computers have access to the Internet and have programs that you may find useful for your courses or presentations.

Computer Specifications

The minimum specifications of the computers are:

  • Windows 7 Operating System
  • 2.0 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • USB Ports

Select rooms also have wireless keyboards, wireless mice, and presentation slide advancers.

Touchscreen PCs

Some auditoriums/lecture halls are equipped with PCs with multi-touch screens. This will enable faculty to use tools in Microsoft PowerPoint to annotate over slides, draw diagrams, and much more. It will also allow Microsoft PowerPoint Presenter View by showing notes on the computer monitor and the presentation on the projection screen. To find out if this feature is available in your classroom, contact Classroom Support at chmed@med.unc.edu.

Software Available

Office/Presentation Software

  • Microsoft Office 2016
    • If using a file from Microsoft Office for Mac or a file converted from another non Microsoft program, we recommend looking through all slides to make sure that formatting was properly preserved.

Class Software:

  • Aperio ImageScope (and web-based plugins)

Multimedia

  • VLC Player
    • This is the preferred player to play DVD’s and other video or audio files. It is compatible with many formats.
  • iTunes
  • QuickTime
  • Windows Media Player

Communication Software

  • Skype for Business
    • This is the software recommended for broadcasting or sharing presentations with distant viewers. Most rooms are not equipped with microphones or video cameras to broadcast. You must indicate your intent to use this in your reservation. Please note that other than the name, Skype for Business is a completely different platform than the consumer/personal Skype.
  • Skype (for consumer/personal Skype accounts)
    • Classroom Support no longer provides the consumer Skype application to prevent conflicts with the new Skype for Business. If you require use of your personal Skype account, you could use the new web-based version. Consumer/personal Skype is not recommended or supported by School of Medicine IT.

Web Browser

  • Internet Explorer
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome

UNC Health Care

  • Access to some hospital applications may be available using the browser-based Citrix client. A link is available on the computer desktop.

Additional software may be installed by presenters provided it not violate the terms of their license agreement. This software will be removed at the next restart of the computer. If you have a recurring program/class that requires software in a room, contact Classroom Support at to see if long-term installation is an option.

DeepFreeze

For security and to maintain the system’s image, DeepFreeze software resets the computer to its original state after a restart and at the end of each day. Any files that have been saved to the computer or any software that has been installed will be deleted. Presenters with recurring events may make use of the File Storage Area to retain files for longer periods, however access cannot be guaranteed, and presenters should always bring a backup copy. A shortcut to the File Storage Area is on the desktop.
