As such, it is recommended for use only by those who do not share the same office computer with other people. Before a remote desktop connection can be accomplished, your work computer must be configured to receive the connection. If you have Windows 10 on your work computer, then it should already be set up for remote connection and you may proceed. If you do not have Windows 10 or you are having other issues connecting remotely, please contact the SOM IT for assistance. Otherwise, choose your operating system by clicking one of the two pictures below.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs oscitas-bootstrap-container \" id=\"unc-tab-0\" role=\"tablist\">\n\n    \n        \n            <li class=\"active oscitas-bootstrap-container nav-tab-list-item\" role=\"tab\" aria-selected=\"true\">\n\n                    \n            <a role=\"button\" class=\" oscitas-bootstrap-container nav-tab-button\" href=\"#tabs-0-0\" data-toggle=\"tab\">\n\n            Windows\n            <\/a>\n\n        <\/li>\n\n    \n        \n            <li role=\"tab\" class=\"nav-tab-list-item\" aria-selected=\"false\">\n\n                    \n            <a role=\"button\" class=\" oscitas-bootstrap-container nav-tab-button\" href=\"#tabs-0-1\" data-toggle=\"tab\">\n\n            MacOSx\n            <\/a>\n\n        <\/li>\n\n    \n<\/ul>\n\n<div class=\"tab-content\">\n\n    \n        <div role=\"tabpanel\" class=\"tab-pane active oscitas-bootstrap-container\" id=\"tabs-0-0\">\n        \n            \n<h1>How to Connect to Remote Desktop in Windows<\/h1>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Starting the Remote Desktop\u00a0Connection<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>On your office computer, go to\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/whatismyip.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/whatismyip.unc.edu\/<\/a>, which will display your office computer&#8217;s IP address (usually in the format 152.19.<em>xxx<\/em>.<em>yyy<\/em>, where\u00a0<em>xxx<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>yyy<\/em> are numbers between 1 and 255). Record this IP to use when using Remote Desktop on your home computer. It is also a good idea to get your computer name as well. To find your computer name press the Windows key and the Pause\/break key at the same time. A screen will pop up will your computer name. You can also right click the start button in the bottom left and click system to find your computer name. It would be listed under device name in this screen.<\/li>\n<li>On your home computer, connect to the UNC Virtual Private Network (VPN) if you are off-campus. For help installing or connecting to the VPN, search for VPN on the <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/help.unc.edu\/sp?id=kb_category&amp;kb_category=08d59252dbfabb006cf4710439961971&amp;kb_id=dfc19531bf2021003f07e2c1ac0739ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UNC help page<\/a>. Most laptops imaged by SOM IT already have VPN installed.<\/li>\n<li>Open the Remote Desktop application on your home computer.\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 7: Click on the\u00a0<strong>Start<\/strong>\u00a0menu, then\u00a0<strong>All Programs<\/strong>, then\u00a0<strong>Accessories<\/strong>, then\u00a0<strong>Remote Desktop Connection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Windows 7, 8 or 10: In a Run dialogue, type\u00a0<strong>mstsc<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Windows 8 or 10: Perform a search (<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" title=\"windows-key-symbol.gif\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/files\/2019\/01\/windows-key-symbol.gif\" alt=\"The Windows Symbol\" \/>\u00a0+\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong>) for\u00a0<strong>Remote<\/strong>\u00a0then click on the\u00a0<strong>Remote Desktop Connection\u00a0<\/strong>search result.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Enter your office computer&#8217;s IP address from step 1 in the\u00a0<strong>Computer<\/strong>\u00a0field.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" title=\"remote_desktop_login\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/files\/2018\/12\/remote_desktop_login.jpeg\" alt=\"login screen\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Remote Desktop window, click\u00a0<strong>Connect<\/strong>. Your laptop or home computer will connect via the Internet to the computer you are trying to access.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" title=\"remote_desktop_login_connect\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/files\/2018\/12\/remote_desktop_login_connect.jpeg\" alt=\"login connect\" \/><\/li>\n<li>If a warning window pops up (as shown below), click\u00a0<strong>Yes<\/strong>\u00a0to confirm that you want to connect. You should now be connected to your office computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Using Remote Desktop<\/h2>\n<p>After logging in to Remote Desktop, your office computer&#8217;s desktop will appear. If you had programs running and\/or files open on your office computer, they&#8217;ll appear just as they were.<\/p>\n<p>While connected to the office computer, a toolbar appears at the top of your screen like the one shown here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" title=\"remote_desktop_toolbar\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/files\/2018\/12\/remote_desktop_toolbar.jpeg\" alt=\"toolbar\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To access a file or program on your local computer (the home computer you&#8217;re using to connect to the office computer), click the minimize button on the toolbar.<\/p>\n<p>While minimized, Remote Desktop Connection will stay running (as will all programs you have open on your office computer). You can restore it by clicking its icon on the taskbar on your home computer (usually at the bottom of your screen).<\/p>\n<p>Your office computer may lock after a period of inactivity, just as it would during normal use. You can unlock it by re-entering your credentials.<\/p>\n<h2>Disconnecting from Remote Desktop<\/h2>\n<p>When you&#8217;re ready to disconnect from your office PC, you may end the session one of the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To leave files and programs open on your office PC, click on the &#8220;X&#8221; button at the right edge of the Remote Desktop toolbar. This will end the remote session but leave files and programs open and running on your office PC.<\/li>\n<li>To close files and programs on your office PC when disconnecting, use the remote computer&#8217;s Start menu (not your home computer&#8217;s Start menu) to log off, just as you would at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        <\/div>\n\n    \n        <div role=\"tabpanel\" class=\"tab-pane  oscitas-bootstrap-container\" id=\"tabs-0-1\">\n        \n            \n<h2>Starting the Remote Desktop\u00a0Connection<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>On your office computer, go to\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/whatismyip.unc.edu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/whatismyip.unc.edu\/<\/a>, which will display your office computer&#8217;s IP address (usually in the format 152.19.<em>xxx<\/em>.<em>yyy<\/em>, where\u00a0<em>xxx<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>yyy<\/em> are numbers between 1 and 255). If it is installed, you will find the Remote Desktop 10 software in your Applications directory or on your desktop dock menu.
