Matt Mauck, MD, PhD, received his undergraduate degree at Xavier University and his MD, PhD degrees through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency in Anesthesiology, followed by a Pain Medicine Fellowship at Duke University prior to joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Mauck, trained as a basic scientist in systems neuroscience, has an interest in the pathogenesis of chronic pain following traumatic injury. He is currently focused on the transition from acute to chronic pain following major thermal burn injury. He is exploring the epidemiology of persistent pain and itch following burn injury, and working towards determining fundamental molecular mechanisms that underlie the transition from acute to chronic pain following burn injury. This work is being performed under the mentorship of Dr. Samuel McLean, and in collaboration with the Jaycee Burn Center here at UNC. Using samples from enrolled burn survivors, Dr. Mauck is applying cutting edge bioinformatics, gene expression analyses, quantitative PCR, statistics, and epidemiology to better understand why a subset of burn survivors ultimately develop chronic pain. Dr. Mauck is a clinician, and sees patients at the UNC Pain Management Center where he provides comprehensive pain management to patients living in chronic pain.
