SUMMARY:Children's Research Institute Seminar Series: Speaker Stephen Kingsmore\, MD\, DSc
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday\, September 10th\, for a special joint lecture\, “Rapid Precision Medicine for Infants in ICUs\,” delivered by Stephen Kingsmore\, MD\, DSc\, President and CEO of Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Children’s Research Institute\, Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care and the Program for Rare and Interstitial Lung Disease. This session will begin at 12:15 p.m. and be held in Bioinformatics 1131. \nAbout Dr. Kingsmore: Stephen F. Kingsmore\, MD\, DSc is President/CEO of Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine (RCIGM)\, where he leads a multi-disciplinary team of scientists\, physicians\, and researchers who are pioneering the use of rapid Whole Genome Sequencing to enable precise diagnoses for critically-ill newborns. Dr. Kingsmore and RCIGM are advancing precision healthcare for infants and children through genomic and systems medicine research. Discoveries at the Institute are enabling rapid diagnosis and targeted treatment of critically ill newborns and pediatric patients at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and partnering hospitals. The vision is to expand delivery of this integrated translational research process to enable the practice of precision pediatric medicine at children’s hospitals across California\, the nation and the world. Project Baby Bear is a pilot program in California that provides whole genome sequencing to babies hospitalized in intensive care. In the past year\, more than 100 infants have received whole genome sequencing\, and half of these children have been diagnosed with rare genetic diseases. Also among his achievements\, Dr. Kingsmore holds the world speed record for achieving the fastest molecular diagnosis using whole genome sequencing in just 19.5 hours.
