This is a good opportunity to ask about things like housing, opportunities to connect with local communities, support systems, etc. at each site.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"details\"><\/a>Campus Assignment Process Details<\/h2>\n<p>In early February, students receive a Qualtrics survey that asks the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Are you a member of one of the School of Medicine\u2019s special programs?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>MD\/PhD<\/li>\n<li>Community Health Training Program<\/li>\n<li>Kenan Urban Scholars<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Do you have an exemption that requires you to be assigned to a certain campus? Exemptions include:<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary and substantive responsibilities for the care of another person who is unable to live independently (brief description of caregiving responsibilities required)<\/li>\n<li>A health matter that requires regular (weekly), in-person health care at an established provider at a particular location (attestation from provider required at the time of form completion)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>How do you rank the six sites?<\/em><br \/>\nEach student will rank the six sites (Asheville, Central Cross-Regional, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Wilmington) in order of preference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">Next, the form asks if students would like to enter the lottery as a \u201cpod.\u201d A pod is a group of up to three students who apply to the lottery as a single unit. The purpose of pods is to offer students the opportunity to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">maintain<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\"> community formed during the Foundation Phase (e.g., friends, roommates, academic support systems). If students wish to \u201cpod,\u201d they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">submit<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\"> the names of group members and an attestation that all group members agree to a single site rank list. Students in special programs (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">MD\/PhD, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">Community Health <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">Training<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">\/<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">Kenan Urban Scholars<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">) and those who request exemptions may not <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\">participate<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5225233 BCX0\"> in a pod.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW165903516 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165903516 BCX0\">Students in the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW165903516 BCX0\">aforementioned special<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165903516 BCX0\"> programs and students with approved exemptions are assigned to campuses. The remaining students and pods of students are assigned to campuses using a computer program that generates <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165903516 BCX0\">an optimal<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165903516 BCX0\"> set of placements given campus capacities and student rankings.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW165903516 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW95135158 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW95135158 BCX0\">Site assignments are announced via email in early <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW95135158 BCX0\">March<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW95135158 BCX0\">. Students with immediate concerns should first contact their advisors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"reassignment\"><\/a>Fall Reassignment Process<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BookmarkStart BookmarkEnd SCXW231415180 BCX0\">Life happens! If students need to request a site reassignment, they may do so during the Neurons to Networks course in the 2nd year (September) of the Foundation Phase. Students who have had a change in their medical needs or other <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW231415180 BCX0\">change<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\"> in life circumstances that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW231415180 BCX0\">requires<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\"> them to reconsider site <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW231415180 BCX0\">assignment<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\"> may <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\">submit<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\"> a request to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\">Student<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\">Support<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW231415180 BCX0\">Committee. While many placements are close to Chapel Hill, others may be up to an hour away. AHEC housing may be available to Central Cross-Regional students doing a short-term rotation at a clinic in Greensboro. This means that the program tries to generate a combination of assignments that results in the maximum number of people getting one of their top three choices (and the fewest number of students getting their bottom choices). Student preferences vary from year to year and site capacity changes, so there is no guarantee that all students will receive a higher ranked campus. If you complete Application Phase at a regional site, you will have the option of staying there for Individualization Phase, thus eliminating the cost of a second move. There are additional considerations at each site. The Curricular Affairs team aims to finalize and release the calendar as soon as possible so that students can make plans. Please note that while the overall Application Phase calendar dates are firm, clinic placements and schedules are <strong>subject to change<\/strong>.
