Curriculum Overview<\/h2>\n<\/a>

The School of Medicine launched its new curriculum, Translational Education at Carolina 2.0 (TEC 2.0)<\/span>, in August 2023. TEC 2.0 engages students in the art and science of medicine through integrated basic science and clinical skills content and longitudinal patient care experiences. The educational experience is designed to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. train physicians who are team players who can navigate change and innovation fluently;<\/li>\n
  2. foster the development of students as adaptive learners who will continue to be life-long, self-directed learners; and<\/li>\n
  3. promote belonging and engagement through small learning groups that foster trust, inquiry, and the development of clinical reasoning and metacognitive skills.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Three Distinct Phases<\/h2>\n

    Foundation Phase<\/h2>\n

    The Foundation Phase is an 18-month experience that integrates the basic, clinical, and social sciences. Medical students take a variety of courses including Patient Centered Care, Social and Health Systems, and Medical Science. Foundation Phase students learn via multiple modes, including small-group learning, seminars, workshops, clinical week experiences, and lecture.<\/p>\nMore About the Foundation Phase<\/a>\n

    Application Phase<\/h2>\n

    During the Application Phase, students spend 12 months completing core clinical clerkships in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. Students can complete the Application Phase at one of six locations: Asheville, Central (Chapel Hill and surrounding areas), Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Wilmington. All campuses and sites have the same course objectives and assessments, but each is characterized by a unique curricular structure and opportunities afforded by diverse geographical locations.     Individualization Phase<\/h2>\n

    The Individualization Phase of the TEC Curriculum is the third and final phase of Medical School education. During these 14 months, students will develop individual core clinical interests and skills with a focus on future career plans.     MD Program Competencies and Enabling Competencies<\/h2>\nThe UNC School of Medicine is dedicated to educating and training students to be outstanding physicians prepared to meet the healthcare needs of diverse patient populations. As such, the UNC School of Medicine graduation competencies were developed to guide the design and implementation of the medical student curriculum.
