Transportation and Parking

Let’s talk about parking on campus. Parking on campus is almost nonexistent.

So here are your alternatives:
Chapel Hill Transit | Park and Ride Lots | Commuter Alternative Program | Biking | Parking

Chapel Hill Transit

This is the main bus service on campus and serves many communities in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Many people are able to ride a bus from their homes into Chapel Hill. This bus system is free for everyone. Click here for more information about Bus Routes to and from Campus including a live bus tracker map.

For Orientation: The closest bus stops to MBRB are:
Mary Ellen Jones Building on Manning Drive (N Route, NU Route, V Route)
Health Sciences Library (HSL) on Columbia Street (J Route, CPX Route, JFX Route, U Route)
Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) on Mason Farm Road (J Route)

Point-to-Point Shuttle
This is an on campus shuttle that runs from dusk until dawn. It serves most of the campus. The U-Bus and the Reverse U-Bus circle campus during the day. Click here for more information about the P2P shuttle.

Park and Ride Lots

Park and ride lots are a popular choice. You have to pay to park at the lot, but free bus service.

  • Carrboro Plaza at Hwy 54/Main St in Carrboro (Carrboro Plaza Express bus)
  • Jones Ferry Road Just south of Old Fayetteville Rd and Jones Ferry Rd (JFX)
  • Southern Village at Hwy 15-501/Dogwood Acres Dr (North/South Express bus)
  • Friday Center at Hwy 54/Friday Center Dr (S bus)
  • Eubanks at Hwy 86/Eubanks Rd (North/South Express bus)

Commuter Alternative Program (CAP)

The Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) rewards UNC employees and students who choose to take the bus, rideshare, bike or walk to campus. Click here for more information about this program.

Biking to Campus

Bus lines have bike racks if you want to ride the bus into campus then have your bike to travel on campus. Click here for more information about registering your bike on campus and bicycle parking.

Parking on Campus

Okay, so you can park on campus, but you have to live two miles from the Bell Tower. To see if you qualify to park on campus, contact the Department of Transportation and Parking (919-962-3951). Follow the link to “Parking” for specific information about applying for a parking permit. Parking for medical students is usually in the S11 Lot near the Dean Dome. This is still a 15 minute walk or a ride on a bus (via the U-Bus) to the medical school campus.

Most parking lots are restricted from 8 AM- 5 PM with a valid parking permit. If you park illegally you will probably get a parking ticket. You can park on campus for free after 5 PM. However, check the lot to make sure that it is available after 5 PM. It is your responsibility to check if parking is allowed in a lot before you park your car.
