Application for Fall 2016
The UNC MD-PhD program welcomes applications from any students interested in a career in medicine and biomedical research. Our program supports students who are pursuing graduate degrees in traditional biomedical fields as well as graduate departments that are usually considered "non-traditional" for MD-PhD programs (such as Public Health and Computer Science).
A list of graduate programs we currently work with are posted in our program overview section.
The MD-PhD program has the same pre-requisite requirements as well as academic and technical requirements as the MD program at UNC-CH.
To apply to the MD/PhD program, you must submit an application through the American College Medical School Application Service (AMCAS). The deadline for submission for the AMCAS application is October 1st, 2015.
Once the AMCAS application is received by our office, it is reviewed by the staff of the UNC MD-PhD program. *New this year: All applicants who submit their AMCAS to the UNC MD/PhD Program will receive an invitation by email to submit a Supplemental Application. (Supplemental material may not be available until mid-July, 2015). The deadline for the Supplemental Application is Thursday October 15th, 2015.
UNC reviews all complete applications by the end of November. Invitations for interviews are issued in December before the holidays.
Applicants who are selected for interviews will visit UNC on one of two interview weekends held in late January. For 2016, our interview weekend dates are schedule for: January 23 -25 and January 30 - February 1. Transportation, lodging and food are provided by the program. Applicants arrive in Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon, and spend the weekend interacting with current students and faculty members; learning about the program in a relaxed social environment. On Monday, formal interviews are held in conjunction with both the medical school and the graduate school.
Due to the large number and competitive nature of the application, we recommend that all application material be completed as soon as possible. We cannot guarantee that applications will be considered complete and ready for review if they are submitted through AMCAS late in the application cycle.
MCAT: You should take the MCAT no later than September 3, 2015. Please review this chart for MCAT score validity. Scores from 2012 or older are no longer valid for the Fall 2016 application cycle.
AMCAS Application Submission: Your application must be submitted to AMCAS by October 1, 2015.
