The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill offers a one-year non-ACGME-accredited advanced fellowship training program in structural heart disease under the supervision of Program Director John P. Vavalle, MD, MHS, FACC. This program will accept one trainee per year and is designed to be completed following training in interventional cardiology. Applicants who have completed training in cardiac surgery will also be considered.

The goal of this fellowship is to train fully independent operators in all facets of structural heart disease. This will include all procedural aspects of catheter-based non-coronary cardiac interventions to treat congenital or acquired cardiac defects. Training during this fellowship will also provide the knowledge needed for appropriate patient selection, procedural planning, and post-procedural management.

The structural heart disease fellow will become an integral component of the UNC Heart Team and will learn how to operate within, and help lead, this complex team working together for the optimal care of our patients. While working within the UNC Heart Team, the fellow will develop the skills needed to build and lead a structural heart disease team of their own.
