Klara is a member of the PSTP program, planning to fast-track into Endocrinology and study diabetes and obesity.
Klara was born and grew up in Atlanta before traveling cross-country to do her undergraduate work at Stanford University, where she pursued research in synthetic organic chemistry. She then joined UNC’s MD-PhD program and completing her PhD in Cell and Molecular Physiology under the mentorship of Dr. Kathleen Caron. Her research focused on the role of a small peptide hormone, Adrenomedullin, in the development of the lymphatic vascular system, an understudied vessel network increasingly recognized to play critical roles in normal physiology and disease states. Using in vivo and in vitro techniques, Klara helped identify a new role for G-protein coupled receptors, and particularly decoy receptors, in lymphatic vascular development and function. Klara has entered Research Pathway training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology with plans to pursue a career in translational medicine, focusing on multi-disciplinary approaches to diabetes and obesity care. With her background in bench research, Klara hopes to bridge gaps between between basic and clinical researchers in order to address the ongoing epidemics of diabetes and obesity.
