Rafat was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh, and moved to the U.S. at age ten eventually landing in Poughkeepsie, New York. He attended Vassar College majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Mathematics. He spent a year working as an ER Medical Scribe and a SAT instructor before attending medical school at New York Medical College. Rafat is passionate about addressing health-care disparities especially among minority populations and providing compassionate patient care. Outside of medicine, Rafat enjoys spending time with his large and sometimes crazy Bengali family, playing basketball and ultimate frisbee, and being overly-competitive at board games. He is very excited to be at UNC and be part of a model public medical institution. Additionally, as a stubborn Knicks fan during their prolonged drought, he is also excited to change things up and cheer on the Tar Heels.
