Alex Kass, MSN, MBA, RN, CDCES

I am the Clinical Research Manager for the Endocrine division and the Operations Manager for the Eastowne Clinical Research Unit. I started in the Endocrine division as a Nurse Research Coordinator in summer 2016.

Where are you from?

I grew up in Kinston, NC.

What originally attracted you to work at UNC Department of Medicine?

I have type 1 diabetes and participated in diabetes trials here. I thought it would be awesome to work on these cutting-edge trials at UNC. So I did!

What is the most interesting project you’ve been a part of so far?

The Bionic Pancreas clinical trial testing an artificial external insulin pump that makes insulin decisions on its own.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

The people are #1, but I also love being on the inside of and helping with up-and-coming pharmaceuticals, devices, and standards of care that will improve people’s lives.

How has your role evolved over time since you’ve been here?

While being a Nurse Research Coordinator, I went to grad school for business and nursing administration. The Endocrine leadership and my colleagues supported me and fostered my growth within the group. I started with assisting the medical director with some administrative duties which grew to full time manager which then led me to a larger role including the Eastowne Clinical Research Unit.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

That a lot of it is problem solving and working with many stakeholders all at once. It can be tough to navigate, but worth it in the end!

What are you most proud of, personal or professional?

That I survived getting two master’s degrees while also working full time.

What’s one thing on your bucket list?

To win the lottery.

Do you have hobbies outside of work that you enjoy?

Yes, I play adult kickball (more intense than you think) and on a rec bowling team. I also love binge watching an abundant amount of TV.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Chill out.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I love space.
